New York City Bodybuilding Scene Of The 1970's
« on: November 20, 2009, 01:40:28 PM »
New York City of the 1970's was a world of sex, drugs, violence, corrupt politics and more.  I'd like to hear from guys who were around the NYC Bodybuilding scene of the 1970's.  I want all the dirt: the gyms, drugs, scandal, G4P, dirty bodybuilder cops, etc.

BEEFY HEAVYWEIGHT is the guy that could tell you all about that. He had some interesting stories.
Almost always, yes.

Pretty much the same in the West Coast era of the time and possibly to some degree now.

According to Ferrigno there wasn't a bodybuilding scene in New York.

Go watch a soap opera or go to TMZ but I will answer this for you:

The gyms:Had machines and plates
drugs:same as today  (everybody lies about dosage then and now)
Scandal:this is bodybuilding not politics
G4p:Gay guys paying for other men.  It's been around for awhile.  Caring about G4p stories is homo
dirty bodybuilder cops:Oh geez thats too lame to even answer

there was a bus ride to Fire Island on sundays from Mid city gym  (NYC)  Once on the bus, all of a sudden they were all gay for the day on the way to make some coins.
A lot of shit went on then. The owner Tom Minichello wrote a book  but supposedly Arnold  had it squashed.
The RUMOR IS Tom ALWAYS GOT ARNOLD A HOTEL ROOM WHEN HE CAME TO TOWN.ONE TIME TOM BROUGHT UP TWO WOMEN FOR THE OAK AND SINCE HE HAD A KEY HE OPENED THE DOOR ONLY TO FIND HIM IN BED WITH GEORGE BUTLER (PUMPING IRON )IN THE BED.

Ferrigno is right (I hope he doesn't charge me $20 for agreeing with him).

I started working out in the mid 80s and there was nothing in Manhattan except for the aforementioned Mid-City Gym.

Eventually, Brian Moss opened Better Bodies, but I didnt have a ponytail, so I wasn't allowed to join. ;)

Then, Bob Fuchs opened Natural Physique Center which was pretty close to where I went to high school and was an actual proper gym, so I joined. I didn't see any overt homosexual activity, there, but heard stories about so 'n so doing g4p. The weirdest thing I saw there was the transformation of Nicole Bass. When she first joined, she was actually bangable then Fuchs got ahold of her, next thing you know, she was squatting more than I was and had a voice like Lemmy from Motorhead.

Minichiello wrote a book published in the last few years:

'Bodybuilders, Drugs and Sex...'

poorly written, very poor grammar...obviously did not have it edited...must have been self-published...but tells an interesting story from those times...I gave my copy to Frank Zane as he was featured in it...he had no comment

Sheridan Square Gym, located right on the square across the street from Village Cigars, was THE gay gym.  I trained there from 1978 - 1982.  That gym was an old-fashioned, hardcore black iron gym with  a few machines.  There was also a tanning deck.  The place was almost exclusively gay.  Gay porn superstar Bruno was a regular there.  There were also a few "Beeper Boys" - hustlers with pagers.  Those were the days. The hardcore atmosphere was very motivating, as were the men and their muscle.  I remember seeing Chris Dickerson and Bob Paris there.  Old-time, straight bodybuilder George Paine trained there regularly.  He was a hard-etched slab of black muscle.  I remember how his biceps would peak when he trained them.  I'd never seen anything like that before in my life.

yes
it was informative
but terribly, terribly written

you could tell, although he used different names, that the players were Arnold, Zane, Franco, Weider, etc.
