Paying kids for performance?
« on: November 20, 2009, 03:28:56 PM »

Is there any *real* difference between paying a kid for getting good grades and paying her for good athletic performance/effort? And further, are either or both 'bad' for kids?

If you’re gonna pay them for either, I suppose grades would be the better choice.
Unless they’re gonna turn pro & make money with sports, excelling at education seems to be the way to go for securing any kind of future.

Offering a cash reward for every “A” (or whatever) could be used as a comparison to illustrate how smarts can earn them money as an adult.

If you want to educate them about realistically making money with sports, teach them how to read a football pool.

They were expected in my house, too, but good grades = chopped sirloin dinner at the Western Steer.  Yes!!

lol @ football pool

I'm teaching her poker and she's an excellent (like, elite level) Uno player.  I suspect she'll be a great card counter, but that's becoming harder to win with as places start using those endless decks.

While hard work should be its own reward, I have no problem with her learning that the harder you work, the more likely you are to succeed and to enjoy the payoffs.

Her mom is just anti-sports in terms of them being a significant part of the kid's life, even though she's glad that kiddo plays and is great at everything, because she knows that sports will eventually interfere with church.  ::)

Fuck church.

I'll never let a church pay my bills.  Even though I admire and respect that churches run successful and pretty efficient welfare programs, I've got way too much pride for that.

I'd steal first.
