It doesn't take much for society to break down
« on: November 24, 2009, 04:14:23 AM »
It’s really interesting to see how little is needed to make society break down, our system which we base humanity law and order is so fragile its actually quite scary.
Take for instance an (in the worldview) insignificant incident which happens atm in Ireland – in a country with a lot of rainfall the government and council is were not able to deal with just a little bit more rain than usual, drainage has not been cleaned and of course as soon as more rain than usual hits certain regions are overflooeded.

What is interesting is how fast things go down the tube so to speak – it doesn’t take much and before you know it you have no electricity you cannot make your babys bottle warm you cannot boil your food.
Next your water is gone and before you know it you see people who have lost their home and because they do what nearly everybody of us is doing (keeping to yourself) have nowhere to go wander the streets no idea were to go next.
Look at Katrina – Granted on a scale of 1 to 10 this was a huge catastrophe, but it was horrific and interesting to see how fast things got out of hand, how fast there were reported rapes and thefts and killings – that was one small part of the US and a very small part of the world.

Now think global – think of easy it is for society on a global level to just go away over night.

I talked to my mother about that a while back  - I would consider my mother a very rational thinking person she is highly educated and very smart (teacher for most of her life) she completely disagreed and said if something on global level would happen similar to Katrina people would stick together and try to rebuild.
But I would disagree I would say yes that some people stick together and try to do the decent thing – but the majority would do the total opposite and try
To make the situation work for themselves.
I mean most people are scared of anybody they don’t know in today’s time already – take the law police and the army out of the game and think how scared people would get if they don’t have the law on their side anymore.

It's survival of the fittest, in the animal kingdom or the human condition. First mode is the protection of the self, than joining groups/gangs of similar notions. Strength in numbers and all it can provide. In a distorted way gangs replace the family group for a lot of people. A rule of martial law develops over time with gangs, some times fairly quickly. Than a crude form of civil law and order may develop. Opportunity, in any disaster, for the strong (either good or bad intentions) to take control and rule. With humans, society may break down but soon or later a new civil order is reformed. May take years, may take century's.  How many nations were formed and started throughout history.

No offense to Stark's mom's but being highly educated and smart do not always go hand in hand. Like being book and theory educated and actually having  street smarts. Getting down and dirty, which is learned through real life experience. Not saying Stark's mom does, but for some folks living in a Ivory towers does have it's draw backs (not to mention it's draw bridges).

Oh man Cormac McCarthy is amazing I read Blood Meridan the Road and no country for old men before the movie came out - I have tried to read the bordertrilogy but I couldn't get into it.
The road was "hard" to read as well - all his books are not easy reading at least not for me I need to concentrate and follow up not like a "King Novel" that just rolls off if you know what I mean.

all this talk about survival of the fittest doesn't mean the more you bench & squat type shit....

Survival of the fitest, strongest,in this day and age would refer to your level of food reserves and your ability to protect it,yourself and your family.IE....guns & ammo, food & clean water determine your chances....

I have high expectations - its not going to be as "good" as the book - but I believe a very good movie neverless
I think however it is explained in the movie what happend to our planet - but in the book he was specificly vague which was genious
