high rep squats, holly shit
« on: December 03, 2009, 12:42:35 PM »
so since I am on a break of heavy lifting for 2-3 weeks, I decided to go for a max with 135 lbs on the squat after I saw the guys at MD saying the did 84 reps with it.

well damn it at 32 reps I couldn't take it anymore but somehow continued to 35 reps.

I was gasping for air, my lungs were burning, I couldn't control my abs anymore and my quads were burning

worst experience ever

and I call BS on the 84 reps from the dude on the MD boards.

84@135 without pause is pretty crazy, but it's doable.  Hitting 84 reps on squats would be more of a test of cardio than strength if your a seasoned squater, i think.  I guess it would depend on the individual.  Someone like Lance Armstrong, whose VO2 max is off the charts, would have an easier time than most with a relatively equal amount of weight.

I'm a fan of high rep deep squats.  I was experiencing knee issues from years of heavy squats & leg presses, so about 18 months ago I jumped on high rep squats, in the 12-25+ rep range.  Maybe going as low as 6 about once a month.  I found my legs lost no size compared to the low rep schemes, and my knees really appreciated it.  Currently I spend almost as much time on warming up the legs as I do on working sets, and my legs are the best they've been.  Not to mention it's great for the lungs. (I shouldn't say currently, as I've been out of the gym for 6 weeks now :'().

High rep squat are a real killer!

84 with 135 is very do-able!

My friend here does 50 reps with 100kg (220) after doing warm ups and 180, 200, 220, 240 and 250 kg.

Could use an inch or two more in debth, but after leg extensions and all the squats his legs were toast!

I remember reading something years ago about how Arnold and The Boyz used to carry a bunch of equipment, weights, bitches, beer and whatever els to the forest and have 'Midnight Squat Parties'.

It gave me an idea. I followed suit and rounded up a couple dudes and had a 'Midnight Squat Party' myself back in 2004. (oh, brother!  ::)  )

I made sure I had bananas, protein powders, creatine and some Haterade. The goal was 1000 reps with 135lbs.

There was 3 of us so we agreed we would each do 100 sets of 10 reps.

It took us until about 5am but we did it. At some points it felt numb after a while. I remember we went to a neaby 24/7 Greek style diner and ate platters of steak and pancakes and were almost falling asleep at the table.

That morning I slept and woke up 13hrs later. I was so stiff and sore I was crippled until Tuesday and had to load on Tylenol, Ibuprofren and whatever els.

Needless to say it didn't put an inch on my quads. My quads still suck.

Take the rules and throw them out of the window, they are of no use here! With
those out of the way, I’d like to take you back to a time when insanity was sanity,
and we thrived on it!
This Quote by Arnold Schwarzenegger is from 1975
"I finally arrived at the idea of shocking the muscles. So once a week I took a
training partner and drove out into the country with the weights. We limited
ourselves to one exercise for a particular body part. I remember for the first day we
carried 250 pounds into the forest and did squats for two hours straight. I began by
doing 20 repetitions with 250 pounds; then my partner did whatever he could. Then
it was my turn again. We ended up doing something like 55 sets of squats each. The
last hour seemed endless. But it worked. Our thighs pumped up like balloons. That
first day we gave our thigh muscles such a shock that we couldn't walk right for a
week and each of us put something like an eighth or a quarter of an inch on our
thighs; they just blew up. They had no chance to survive except to grow. We made it
a regular thing. We brought girls out there to cook. We made a fire outdoors and
turned the whole thing into a little contest. We worked hard, but we had a good
time. After the muscle-shocking sessions, we drank wine and beer and got drunk and
carried on like the old-time weightlifters sometimes it be came pure insanity."
What Arnold displayed here was the mentality of a warrior. However it went beyond
this, well beyond! The man had an undying passion for this sport, and it shown
through in perhaps an unmatched way. This story has always fascinated me and I
have actually applied it to myself in many ways. So much so, that I developed a "
modern day “ Austrian Blitz! My main objective was to take a weight training
session and turn it into a fun and challenging event!

84x135 without a pause is crazy-strong and fit in my opinion.  I doubt I could do much more than 20 without pausing.

About every 10-12 weeks I will have my guys do "hundreds" on all body part. It more complicated than I just described but we do it for muscular endurance and to help break through lactate threshold. We (most of my athletes) will follow it from 4-6 weeks. Another theorie is that it creates hyperplasia (cell division). I modified it, but its a theorie that dates back almost 25 years ago. MaxRep knows of this.

Maybe I am just a pussy and my cardio sucks ass but seriously, I can't imagine ever doing more than 50 reps with 135 lbs !

I can squat 405lbs a few times but the 135lbs x 35 was much harder for me  :o

I think the video with Jesse Marunde's partner (Sarge or something?) was pretty damn inspiring.
The guy had worked up to trying his body weight (I believe it was 218?) for a 100 reps. Not sure how long he'd trained for it, but they video'd the day it was to be achieved. It's a lesson in persistence, desire and will to want something so bad.
He got all the way to 98 reps, while having to take long pauses between reps, gasping for air and you can see how difficult this was. He failed, nearly passed out, and got up for one last try but he was spent.
Still one of the most inspiring things I've ever watched, even though he didn't meet his goal.

In case the above doesn't work, number 21 from the list on this link:
