Developing countries react furiously to leaked draft agreement that would hand more power to rich nations, sideline the UN's negotiating role and abandon the Kyoto protocol

The UN Copenhagen climate talks are in disarray today after developing countries reacted furiously to leaked documents that show world leaders will next week be asked to sign an agreement that hands more power to rich countries and sidelines the UN's role in all future climate change negotiations.

The document is also being interpreted by developing countries as setting unequal limits on per capita carbon emissions for developed and developing countries in 2050; meaning that people in rich countries would be permitted to emit nearly twice as much under the proposals.

The so-called Danish text, a secret draft agreement worked on by a group of individuals known as "the circle of commitment" – but understood to include the UK, US and Denmark – has only been shown to a handful of countries since it was finalised this week.

The agreement, leaked to the Guardian, is a departure from the Kyoto protocol's principle that rich nations, which have emitted the bulk of the CO2, should take on firm and binding commitments to reduce greenhouse gases, while poorer nations were not compelled to act. The draft hands effective control of climate change finance to the World Bank; would abandon the Kyoto protocol – the only legally binding treaty that the world has on emissions reductions; and would make any money to help poor countries adapt to climate change dependent on them taking a range of actions.

The document was described last night by one senior diplomat as "a very dangerous document for developing countries. It is a fundamental reworking of the UN balance of obligations. It is to be superimposed without discussion on the talks".

33,

Obama had a slight lead in polls against the GOP contender in 2008.

Today, after a year of libbing it up during a depression, he's tied against them.

Not the slide you'd expect.  You'd have thought ANY gop contender would be up by 15 points right now.  Now, if economy bounces back... Obama can only go up.  Repubs should be worried about this - not celebrating obama's 2012 loss already.

The GOP needs to do the following:

1.  Purge the RINO's.
2.  Come up with a Contract w America like Newt did.
3.  Admit to their past mistakes
4.  focus solely on 2010.

yeah, they could have won in 2008 if, in October, they had listed the 10 things they would change about the Bush admin for their own term.

Mccain slipped at the end, remember, and gave that mini-meltdown on how bad bush had fcked things up... but then went back to canned speeches that night and afterwards.

Until they change the sheets, they're sleeping in Dubya's wet spot.

True - but not since 1930s has the economy been this bad.  he SHOULD be lower.  The fact he's still at 47%, after all the lib moves and the horrible economy - means he's actually in good shape.

Bush had 7% unemeployment and the SAME WARS and was at 28% approval.  Obama has 20 pounds on him - as unemployment sits at 10%.  unreal to me.

I agree.

Friend --

As we head into the final stretch on health reform, big insurance company lobbyists and their partisan allies hope that their relentless attacks and millions of dollars can intimidate us into accepting the status quo.

So I have a message for them, from all of us: Not this time. We have come too far. We will not turn back. We will not back down.

But do not doubt -- the opponents of reform will not rest. So I need you, the members of Organizing for America, to fight alongside me.

We must continue to build out our campaign -- to spread the facts on the air and on the ground, and to bring in more volunteers and train them to join the fight. I urgently need your help to keep Organizing for America's 50-state movement for reform going strong.

Please donate $5 or whatever you can afford today:

Let's win this together,

President Barack Obama

You can spin that any way you want. but the facts are the facts.

Obama has the lowest approval rating in history of ANY president at the same time in his presidency. There is a reason for that.

I don't disagree with anything you guys say.

I'm just saying his ass should be way lower, and he has a depression to credit some of the low numbers.

Repubs can't get all complacent like they did with health care (hahaha... it's september and health care is dead... haha we rock guys!).  They can't just pat themselves on the back for 47% in the midst of a depression.  Cause when that depression is over, there's no doubt obama will move up at least 4 points.  And 51% is all he needs to win again.  And that means Thune can't come in and slash spending, fellahs.
