If someone in your family or friend died, and assuming I didn't realize you were such a callous, narcissistic, asshole; we would sympathize with you, regardless of whether or not we knew the person you loss, because we know you and you're a part of us. Show you some courtesy and respect.

As an aside, when I used the term moral equivalence I was referring to Swede equating some Somalian getting shot in the head or starving to death to someone that we knew and touched our lives. There's a lot of tragedy and horror in the world and if we felt the same about some African starving to death due to a corrupt government as we would about someone who made a difference in our lives we would be emotionally overwhelmed.
