When well-known actors fake accents...
« on: December 11, 2009, 11:50:51 AM »
Does it distract you?

That movie where Leo Dicaprio (Blood Diamond?) had an accent it only seemed really fake for about the first 1/2 hour ...then you didn't really notice it.

But last night 30 Rock was on and Juliette (?) Moore was on using a "Boston" accent.  It was inconsistent, sporadic and terrible and it made her acting seem horrible.

when they are good, tis doesn't distract me.  Di Caprio was a bit distracting.

What was really distracting to me was in Vallkyre when every one had a German accent except tom cruise.  (he was the worse part of that movie)

I notice in Forrest Gump, Tom Hanks has his accent, but in the army barracks and he's yelling "Sir, yes sir!" he loses the accent...just an observation...

We watched that last night.  I noticed some of the German soldiers had British accents too.

There was one movie w/Dustin Hoffman where he was some kind of strip joint owner or something and a criminal and he used a ridiculous accent and his acting was terrible...maybe because of the accent.  We couldn't watch but 5 min. of it.

You must be talking about "Confidence" with Edward Burns, Rachel Weisz, Andy Garcia, and Paul Giamatta.
I thought that was a FABULOUS movie, ...and Dustin really nailed his character. I thought he did a great job, as did the whole ensemble.

HATE fake southern accents......just plain awful.   And I saw the 30 Rock episode, and you are right Stella, Moore sounded terrible.

the worse I have seen was Nicolas Cage's southern accent in Con Air.

great actor, horrible faked accent. thankfully, the movie was good enough to overcome this.

With the release of Iron Man 2, we'll be able to add Mickey Rourke to this list.
Great actor, ....but horrible Russian accent, ...although it was a very valient effort.

oh... pretty much ALL the Jamaican accents in 'Cool Runnings'
A friend of mine was both the photo double and the stunt double for one of the actors.
He is Jamaican, ...and I don't know how he kept a straight face throughout the entire shoot.

Brad Pitt's accent in Ingouroius Bastards is very unconvincing and you can't take him seriously throughout that entire film - probably the worst example I can think of.

Personally I didn't think Leonardo Di Caprio's Zimbabwe accent in Blood Diamond was too bad. The accent itself does get on your nerves a bit though.

One actor who always delivers up a good performance in no matter what film he's in is Christian Bale - that guy is the master of accents.

Anybody from New Orleans? I thought Brad Pitt did a great job in Benjamin Button, speaking in that accent, but it's always the native speaker who can best judge that stuff.

I think Brad Pitt used that accent for a reason. I'm not saying that Brad Pitt is a great actor, nor am I defending him. But what I am saying is, look at the film. The whole thing was kind of over the top, Tarantino-ish cheese, and far fetched. I think the accent being that cornball was intentional, to suit the theme of the entire film.

You could be right - me and my brother were talking about it and he said the exact same thing.
