Is Arnold Schwarzen*gger the first "Modern Bodybuilder"?
« on: December 17, 2009, 04:38:59 AM »
It seems like there was "before Arnold" and after...
I'm not just talking about Arnold's status as an ambassador for the sport; I'm talking about his physique.
He was the first guy to present something that actually holds up to contemporary bodybuilders.
The distance (physique-wise) between him and Reeves is just tremendous.
Definitely ahead of his time.

No, Sergio was first. The difference between him and Larry Scott determined the birth of modern Bbing. But if you think Arnold could hold his own against contemporary Bbers, I think you're sadly mistaken; put him at his best on a stage and he wouldn't even get his pro-card nowadays. Standards have changed drastically.

if arnold had today's 'sports nutrition', he'd be gunter schkerkamp.

and, since he would be so marketable, they would change judging criteria so that he won every year.

Really? I mean, wasn't Sergio mostly just arms? Didn't Arnie beat him almost every time they went head-on?
It just seems like Arnold was far more well-rounded. I could be wrong.

Sure, Arnie wouldn't look as big as contemporary bodybuilders, however, I think that's primarily due to his legs.
He wouldn't look "dwarfed" is what I'm saying; Reeves would look dwarfed. I think Arnold not getting a pro-card to day is hyperbole.

No, Sergio had actually a very good back and better legs than Arnold (except maybe for the '73 Arnold who brought them up). Many think he should have won in '72. He just never achieved great conditioning. Arnold had a good back but not fantastic (look at Robby Robinson for a great back at that time period) also but he was all arms and chest, his delts weren't nearly as good as the rest of his upper front, midSEction was fine but Nubret had him on that most of the time.

If you go back to where Sergio was standing, Sergio was the best bodybuilder in the world while the Mr.Olympia contest was just a new project (2 year old competition)  a "try out" to have an stablished tittle like Mr.America or Mr.Universe.......would it make sense to put up with Joe W. crap to be the poster boy of his products?..when you allready have more crediblity than the tittle itself?

Sergio a 3 times champ lost to Arnold fairly in 70' then was disrespected in 71 and 72 forced to walk away from Weider's IFBB while Arnold a one time winner (70) became everything  the IFBB had to offer.

I alawys said that. Aenold had a wide waist...he even stated that. Gunter had a wide waist as well. I had ve to say it was equally Sergio, Arnold, and Nubret that ushered in "modern bodybuilding"

What difference does it make to be considered the first "modern" bodybuilder anyway?

How do you define modern?

Haney was more modern than Arnold, Dorian was more modern than Haney, and Ronnie was more modern than Dorian. Different eras, but it's still bodybuilding.

I'm gonna put this to rest by saying Arnold had the GREATEST physique ever. You don't get the IFBB Gold Order as being the BEST bodybuilder of the 20th century for nothing. :)
