The big future markets are probably China and India.
I don't think Geely is looking at the US market with Volvo. Ford already failed there. I think it's China where they're setting their aim. And that's their official strategy as well.
GM has made a impact with Buick, due to historical reasons...Buick is the number selling brand there (I take it foreign or domestic, I 've read several reports, but i can't confirm it with official numbers), And Audi is strong as well. Volvo actually was doing good. Ford failed because it was picking up too many brands, and it's core cars sucked blue donkey balls. Jacque Nasser had the right idea of putting Lincoln, Volvo, Jag, Aston Martin, and Range Rover in the Premier auto group, but Lincoln got no real new cars accept for the LS, Jag needed the F type, and in fact is why Nasser was ousted---due to a comment he said that Jaguag should produced the F type, that they would be stupid not to.
Greed is what has hemmed up all car companies, Toyota included...the number one spot is wha they all seek to obtain.
