Hardware: he had no strict schedule so no need for lots of processing power, low resolution also decreases the amount of processing power needed per frame. This does not fly in a commercial hollywood production with a strict schedule. It's not a one on one comparison.
Actors: friends, art-school students etc. no need to pay them or provide lodgings, food etc.
Outdoor footage, often cheaper. Inside you need gaffers, screens, etc etc etc.
There's so much more to a big production, in terms of logistics. A small production like this is always much much cheaper because it doesn't have the huge overhead of all kinds of support staff ( and an expensive cast).
