Well I ordered and paid for a Lenovo W700DS.  It is the most awesome laptop out there.  Was supposed to be shipped on Dec. 10 then it went to Dec 18 and then Dec 24 and then Dec 28. and finally Jan. 6  All during this time I tried to talk to someone and no answer only a recording to leave a message.  Not once did I get  a call back.  I emailed them and it took 10 days to respond.  I finally talked to some fucking guy from India that I couldn't understand and all he did was read from some script.  In short they have the worst customer service of any company I have dealt with.  I cancelled my order and went to Fry's and bought an Acer 8940 with an 18" screen.  It was a letdown not getting the Lenovo but I could imagine how shitty it would be to deal with them if something ever went wrong.

LENOVOS ARE AWESOME!!!!  I used to have a Thinkpad X61 tablet, but they are soooo overpriced, too much!

This dell is actually really good for its size and price (11 inches so its small, and runs a pentium processor and 4 GB of ram so it will handle well):

 http://www.amazon.com/Dell-Inspiron-11-6-Inch-Obsidian-Windows/dp/B002PY7OJE/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&s=pc&qid=1262101973&sr=1-4

Again no cd drive and its 520 so I dunno if thats past your budget!

I bought my oldest daughter an Acer netbook.  She says she loves it.  But none of those have a DVD built in.  She just wanted something to take to the beach and be able to get on the internet.  She has a desktop at home

Thanks for your efforts!  I like this one.  20.00 bucks over is no big deal.

Well that is what I heard but when I buy something I would like it when they say it will be delivered.  I had no problem if someone would explain to me why so long but no answer ever.  I was getting so pissed off.  This one was almost $5,000 the way I had it customized but I bought it on Black Friday and they had a great sale going on so it ended up only costing around $2500.  Oh well.  The Acer is really good though I got.  6gb ram and a 500gb hard drive. TGhe 18" screen is unreal.  It has a gig of dedicated video too so it seems to be really good.   Heavy though for a laptop at around 10 pounds,

That ACER sounds bad ass like no other, I would've like an 18 inch screen, but I settled for 17.3 because of price :-D

i got a small laptop from 199computerStore on ebay.
it was $350 and pretty quick.
Loaded with the wireless card, does the job.

It's been dropped, lost, left lying around, and it's only $350 to replace if needed.

It is really nice.  I like the backlit keyboard.  The screen is just awesome.  Very fast and it has Blue Ray too.

If you're looking for something really small with great battery life check out this Toshiba.  It weighs less than 3 lbs and I've gotten a legit 8 hours out of the battery.  Yes it's slower than a high-powered laptop or desktop but for checking email and things like that it's just fine.

I'm posting from an Acer Aspire One.  Very small, but had to upgrade the battery as the original battery was dirt (1.5 hours at best...now getting 6 hours).  Good for browsing and a little bit of word processing.

I've never had any problem with youtube, streaming radio or anything like that.
You might want to go to the store and check out the netbooks just to make sure the smaller screen and keyboard are acceptable for you.

I just took a ride to Bestbuy and you're right, in person, they are ultra small.  I might as well spend 500.00 and get a smaller laptop.  The kids they have working there are scum, so none of them were helpful at all.

Hmmm, Lenovo, owned by the Chinese, customer service by India. Conspiracy, no?

I'm not sure what to buy.  There has got to be a kickass netbook.

Again this is running an ATOM processor, and in my opinion even that is too slow for just checking e-mail, my mother in law who has very basic needs from a laptop, (ie checking mail and light internet browsing) and she is constantly complaining about how slow it is.  Spend a little bit more for a pentium, or AMD athalon dual core.

The atom processor is awesome bro..It can be tweaked like a muthaF ker...

I had an MSI wind which had that same 1.6 GHZ atom processor...However, it had a factory overclock feature, where i was able to get a 25% overclock with no problems, so that pushed the processor speed to well above 2.0 ghz...I also doubled the ram to 2 gigs....threw in a 8 gig SSD for more speed...

Plus i also found special editions of windows xp on the net that were fully functional at 170 mb installed...

All in all i was able to boot windows Xp in about 14 seconds

i hear the atom can be pushed to about 2.5 ghz..

MSI has great US based customer service

I can't do any of that.   Why do all the netbooks have atoms?  There isn't one that has a better chip, stock?

Intel Atom N270 Overclocked to 2385MHz, Probably the Fastest Atom Ever
Have you ever thought of overclocking your shiny little netbook, probably not, but here's what might happen if you're wondering. In my humble opinion this is ridiculous, but it's possible. Overclocking experts from Team Australia, using an ordinary MSI Wind U100 netbook and a single Kingston 2GB DDR2 667Mhz SO-DIMM, have done the unthinkable, overclock the hell out of an Intel Atom N270 netbook processor. If you remember, MSI recently released a v1.09 BIOS for the Wind that allows overclocking. That's exactly what Team AU have done, dismantle an MSI Wind netbook, put some LN2 cooling and use the latest BIOS to max the Intel Atom CPU frequency. The end result is pretty good, they've managed to push the poor 1.6GHz Atom N270 CPU to an amazing 2385MHz (FSB 199 x 12 multiplier) and take a CPU-Z snapshot. There's really no point in doing that, but it's pure fun. The full discussion thread for this insane experiment is posted over at XtremeSystems.

microsoft and there licensing agreement with Intel is why

microsoft agrees to sell discount versions of windows, with the condition that the computer can't have higher than a 1.6Ghz processor, and one gig of ram...

If the computer has higher specs than that, the manufacturer will have to pay the full price for MS windows.

the atom is the best processor right now..However, Nvidia makes an awesome graphics chipset for these newer netbooks, called the tegra.
