Toxie, circumstances sometimes prevent people from doing things. For instance, both my grandparents on both sides were from poor farming backgrounds. On my mother's side, they had to drop out of school at early ages to work the farm. Yet they were not stupid, my granfather building and wiring a house that still stands today...and it was built in the 40's. They also impressed upon my mother and her siblings how important education was.
There was a 60 mins program a while back that went back to a story yrs ago. It was about a very poor black family in Mississippi. Well the son went to Howard, now today, they siblings are doctors (a brain surgeon), attorneys, etc. This family was dirt poor, but their parents held education, which they didn't have, in high regard.
You have to understand our history pre-1950, especially dealing with black folk. And dealing with black folk, who have to fight the "wells We's colored folk ain't gots da smarts thems white folks gots", mentality, that is still prevalent today.
