How many times can the world end?
Greetings, hardcore rapture party rats! We don't want to rain on your parade as you prepare to celebrate this Saturday, May 21, 2011, the date Oakland Bible maven and Family Radio President Harold Camping has picked as the end of the world. But, well, we think some management of expectations is in order here. You see, it turns out that Camping has predicted the end of the world before -- and been wrong.
That's right: Camping, an eccentric civil engineer, bet the farm back in the day on his prior prophecy that Jesus would return and bring the end of times in 1994. He even wrote an entire book on the subject: 1994? So while we know you're busy ticking off your Rapture Bucket List, you might want to reconsider your plans to tell off your boss and have lots of unprotected sex in the next 48 hours, because there's a fair chance you'll still be here on Monday.
Don't be sad. A few Biblical scholars recently graced this blog's comments section with some enlightening insights on the rapture. It's going to happen, they say -- just not on Saturday.
As the astute "ManlyMan2" pointed out:
Sorry to be the party pooper, but there is no Rapture this month ! The signs are not yet all here; most are but not all. The antiChrist has to announce himself, this will be the last event before the Rapture so that the loyal in Christ will be spared from the terrible events to follow. Some say that it is obama, and others say he is too stupid to be the devil himself, but this could a plot to appear dumb, "Dumb like a Fox" !!!
Don't worry, ManlyMan2, you're no party-pooper, and we suspect you are not Dumb like a Fox. Perhaps Dumb like a Centipede.
