Apple Tablet Rumored To Be Announced Today at 1PM EST (Jan. 27)

Rumors are spreading across the Internet that the long-awaited Apple tablet could be announced later this month.

According to the Financial Times, Apple rented a stage at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco for late January and is expected to make a major product announcement on Tuesday, Jan. 26 Wednesday, Jan. 27.

Touch-screen computing is quickly becoming a new hype. Microsoft included touch-screen support with its latest Windows 7 operating system. Many handheld devices such as e-readers, portable media players, and phones are also beginning to include touch-screen technology.

Google China president Kai-Fu Lee wrote a blog post also saying the tablet will be revealed this month, according to PC World. The post adds that the tablet will resemble a large iPhone, have a 10.1-inch multitouch screen, and will use a virtual keyboard.

The Apple tablet is expected to be called the iTablet or the iSlate—going off of registered trademarks—although the final name is still uncertain.

The tablet was expected to be announced last September, but were left waiting and wondering. New reports say it could ship in the first quarter of 2010.

The function of the device is still unknown, although it is expected to be akin to a touch-screen MacBook. Some are speculating it will be closer to a juiced-up, large iPod Touch with some PC functions. Some say it will be more of an advanced e-reader that can play media. Regardless, it gives everyone something to look forward to.

There are several concept images floating around the Web—none of which are official. The price is expected to be between $500 and $800.

For those who simply cannot wait, there are currently tablet computers available that run the Mac OS, which are also relatively affordable. The modbook from Axiotron has a touch-screen that can be manipulated though the use of a stylus pen.

Still, Apple could have some tricks up its sleeve for the tablet that may be worth the wait.

I love my iPhone as it's great to have Getbig, porn, music and email in my pocket at all times. But I'm not convinced of the benefit of having to lug around something that costa more than a netbook.

You'd keep this at home as a couch/shitter surfing device first and foremost I'm thinking...not sure what effect it's not having a CD/DVD player/burner might have on it's ability to replace everybody's current computer but then again you never know, it might have that too.

I hate netbook's for 2 reasons..

1) tiny ass keyboard makes it impossible to write fast

2) no DVD drive

I’d be shocked if this tablet included a CD/DVD drive.  Including a drive would increase the price and weight of the slate unnecessarily; the wireless slate device is primarily a reader (newspapers, magazines, comics, books, etc.) so a disk drive is inconsistent with its purpose.  A USB port?  Yes.  A DVD drive?  No.  Virtually everyone who buys this tablet will also already own a computer (Mac/PC) that has a CD/DVD drive and the slate will be used as companion device to your computer much as the iPhone or iPod is.  Content that needs to come to the slate via a CD or DVD should come to the tablet when it is networked to your main computer.  

I’m amused when I hear people say things like, “I'm not convinced of the benefit of having to lug around something…”  Guys like Steve Jobs became fabulously wealthy because they can see things you apparently cannot.  When the telephone was first invented, many "experts" criticized it as a useless device.  Because virtually no one else owned one, critics could not see the benefit of owning one and they could not envision that a phone would so radically change the way people communicated.  Presumably even Special Ed now sees the utility of a telephone.

Because it will run all apps from the App store, Apple’s slate computer will be a big success.  Eventually, I expect that it will replace notebook computers.  People will own a main computer at home (such as an iMac) and a iTablet for reading and mobile computing.  

I have a Mac Pro at home... and a Macbook that I use in bed and/or while traveling.  I have no need to think about it in the near term but I can see that eventually my laptop will be replaced by a tablet Mac.

Everything will be hosted/accessible/stored "somewhere else"  on centered gigantic secure servers in the hands of governments/medias/commercials, and you ll just have to carry a portable screen/ interface.

the problem is that apple wants to sell e-books on this tablet. Without an e-ink screen that not going work.
I betting dollars to doughnuts that apple is going to use a OLPC-type dual-mode TFT display. But gray scale isn't the same as e-ink.
