While certainly it is technically possible to build a  building 2,625 feet high,...is it economically viable?...Is it worth what it costs?...Engineer I met told me that the highest you can build an economically viable building is around 1500 feet.

I really doubt it that it's economically viable. This and many other skyscrapers are build just for the sake of it.

this building is one of the true wonders of the world, maybe the most incredible man-made structure ever.

that said, in all its haste to become a world class city, Dubai never quite understood one simple thing- that the skyscrapers didnt make new york, they were simply the culmination of all that new york had grown to be over many, many decades. in dubai they thought they could build the skyscrapers first, and a new york would grow up around them...but it doesnt work that way

I've actually been there while it was in construction, its unreal how high it is, one can't fathom its sheer size until they actually see it in person especially from up above in a plane and comparing it to the other tall high rises around it, it completely dwarfs them.  Hopefully the city will be able to recover from its crazy debt at some point!
