Steve Schmidt: Palin 2012 Would be "Catastrophic" Pick
« on: January 12, 2010, 01:12:57 PM »
Calling Sarah Palin a potentially "catastrophic" choice for the 2012 GOP presidential nominee, John McCain's former chief campaign strategist Steve Schmidt said today the Republican party needs to look more toward the center.

"I think she has talents, but my honest view is that she would not be a winning candidate for the Republican party in 2012," he said. "Were she to be the nominee, we could have a catastrophic election result."

It is not inconceivable Palin could win the 2012 Republican nomination, Schmidt said -- but it is inconceivable she could win the presidency.

"In the year since the election has ended she's done nothing to expand her appeal beyond [her conservative] base," he said.

This is old news. However,I noticed you left out the part where he also said that without Palin McCain would have NEVER EVER led in the campaign, nor did you mention that he said it was because of HER that the election was even as close as it was.

You might be right, 33.

Does anyone have Gallup numbers for just Obama vs Mccain, from the time they were decided candidates (must have been what, April or May?) up til August when they chose running mates?

240 - the GOTV effort of the McLame campaign was horrific.  You also had 24/7 kneepadding by the msm and a massive minority and youth tunout.

Palin brought out the base that would have stayed home in McLame picked lieberman and at least kept it somewhat close.

33,

You and i will always disagree on this.  You think palin gave him 8%, and I think she cost him 8%.

Does anyone have the gallup numbers that will prove one of us right?

bottom line:
http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2008/president/us/general_election_mccain_vs_obama-225.html

Mccain was ahead of obama at several points in the summer of 09 when they were both the de facto party selections, and before they had chosen Veeps.

Case closed.  Obama was ahead more of the time, but Mccain led at times.  This dispels the argument that he would have lost by double digits without Palin.  He LED without palin.  gallup and rasmussen alike!

Great post 240! Truth trumps spin!

Look at when McCain suspended his campaign and came out for TARP.  That was when this whole thing was over.

LOL "My buddies in the media".

You always seem to exclude FOX - the 31 cable news outlet - when you talk about the media.

Reminds me of McDonalds going on a crusade against "mainstream fast food".

PALIN supported tarp as well.  She told us how the country needed it.  She's either gullible or just following orders - but I'd prefer a person like a Thune who told us the truth about it.

Bro - just be honest.

Fox news is a fraction of the overall media outlets.

His biggest lead was AFTER she spoke at the convention.PERIOD!!End of discussion. He his biggest deficit was when HE suspended  his campaign to go to Washington and do NOTHING.Thats when he dropped about 7 points in the polls. The idea that she cost him votes is silly.!!!Thats the facts.Without her John McCain would not have gotten ANY of the base out.Conservatives DESPISE John McCain. Here we have a thread of about 6 guys, three of which are conservatives, two of which say they WOULD NOT have voted for McCain had it not been for her.Thats the way it would have been nation wide.

Do you honestly think ANY of the religious right would have bothered going to the polls were it not for her.John McCain is a horrible candidate,a horrible republican and a horrible campaigner. The very fact that his first choice for VP was one of the biggest social and economic liberals in Washingtom,Joe Lieberman says all you need to know about him.

Some people here don't take people at their word on votes.

Bush 00
Bush 04
Barr 08

Those were mine, and people have the audacity to doubt me.

Some of us doubt you because you knee pad for Obama's agenda which is anything but libertarian/conservative in its approach.

Probably so. 2008 was my FIRST defection from GOP.

So what if its Thune 2012?

Tell me what GOP candidate you could support?

former repubs are often the most venemous and passionate non-repub voters.

it's not that they stopped being republicans - it's that the party stopped being republican.

Bush was an amnesty loving, nation-building, elective-war waging, fearmingering lib in repub's clothing fellahs.

All these 'new' repubs that were sucking bubba in 92 and 96 make me sick, lecturing on what it means to be a repub.

I think 333386 will agree with that statement as well, no?

"it's not that they stopped being republicans - it's that the party stopped being republican."
