why do christian black people use muslim or muslim sounding names?
latif is an arabic name...i've noticed this many times...a male muslim name turned into a female name "latif" means joyous one
There was a large Muslim movement in the American black community in the 1960s and, to an extent, there still is today. It is called "Nation of Islam".
Malcom X was one of the pioneers in this movement. After he took the Hajj, he learned that they were really being disingenious racists and perverting Middle Eastern Islam for their own ends.
However, it is still very popular or "cool" to use these Arabic names for a lot of American blacks. I think there are far less strict adherents to the Nation of Islam than there were forty or fifty years ago, but the names continue, for whatever reason.
