CARACAS (AFP) – Sony's PlayStation video game console is "poison" and leads children down the capitalist "road to hell," Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said.

Chavez, in his weekly radio-TV show "Alo Presidente," called on Venezuelan manufacturers to make "educational" toys and dolls with indigenous peoples' features to replace capitalistic counterparts like the Barbie doll that "have nothing to do with our culture."

In expanding on his dislike of western toys and games -- he already slammed Nintendo for promoting "selfishness, individualism and violence," Chavez Sunday took on the world's top selling game console, Sony's PlayStation.

"Those games they call 'PlayStation' are poison. Some games teach you to kill. They once put my face on a game, 'you've got to find Chavez to kill him.'"

The firebrand leftist president said any game that "bomb cities or just throw bombs," are sold by capitalist countries to sow violence so they can "later sell weapons."

They "promote the need for cigarettes, drugs and alcohol so they can sell them. That's capitalism, the road to hell," he added.

Venezuela, Chavez said, should be making "educational games," and suggested designing "little indigenous dolls" to sell in place of dolls "like Barbie, that have nothing to do with our culture."

Venezuelan lawmakers in October passed a law outlawing the sale of "bellicose" games and videogames that can be punished with up to five years imprisonment.

These "games" promote violence, selfishness, isolationism, contempt of education, loss of reality etc etc etc. I have never seen kids so "caught up" in these products:Playstation, XBOX, Nintendo, GameBoy etc. These kids and even adults lose their social/communicative lives for the sake of CONSTANTLY playing these games. To add worry to this I became concerned after seeing kids play these games hours on end without stopping. How can a product capture a childs attention span so well and hold it for hours??? Makes you wonder if there is some kind of subliminal messaging or the like going on to allow this to happen....

A few people in Japan play those games and watch those videos...but they are NOT submersed in it as you americans are. Neither is their culture filled with violence, depravity, hatred , contempt in every facet. you would be hard pressed to find an american book, movie, video, TV series, game, or anything not submersed in VIOLENCE...and you wonder why you are the most VIOLENT NATION ON THE EARTH!!!

Samson, I would not blame video games for that as much as I would say that the dumbed down educational system and lower demands made of students academically is more a function of that.

Have you ever watched Anime before?  I've been watching it since the 70s.  Yes, it is filled with violence and yes, Japanese kids are exposed to it very much from a very early age.

Video games make kids fat if the video games replace their physical activity.   Video games do not make them fat if they play them in moderation and also play sports and watch what they eat.

Hugo Chavez is fat, and he's making these comments because he is mad at the PlayStation, apparently because some game allegedly includes a mission where kids have to find Hugo Chavez and assassinate him.

Agreed - GTA VC was easily my favorite of the series.  III was great because it revolutionized the gameplay, and they combined all the greatness into VC.

SA was so big I lost interest mid way through when I got an XBox.  I tried IV, but it was basically all the same stuff as it used to be, with no real progression in controls, graphics and gameplay.
