Why would anyone wanna be an MMA Fighter?
« on: January 19, 2010, 10:01:39 PM »
I can understand watching the sport, but why would you wanna train to be one?  Even if you reach the top of the sport, its not that lucrative and seems pretty dangerous.

The other day I met a girl who was a friend of a friend, and when I asked her boyfriend what he did for a living he said "I'm training to be an MMA fighter".  I tried my best to hold a straight face.

Now juicing up, slappin on some pro-tan, and stepping on stage in a glitter thong for hundreds of schmoes I can understand.  But why MMA?

What says you Getbig?

i want to be a cagefighter b/c its the closest thing today to being a gladiator in the roman empire

i'd give anything to go back to ancient times to be a gladiator

imagine the adrenaline of fighting (possibly to your death) in the colliseum
in front of a capacity audience breathless in suspense during the fight
then if you win enough you can earn your freedom and be a living legend among the people
and dine with all the great aristocrats

unbelieveable!

Because it's a fad and anyone can literally do it. To be good at it is another thing.

For as much as I'm around it and how many fighters I train and as much as I corner for my fighters.....I don't get it or understand why they would want to do it either. I like to train MMA because of the conditioning, but for the life of me I don't understand why someone would get into an octagon to beat the shit out of each other :-\

Yeah I thought about being a gladiator and it'd be cool, but they put tigers out on you as well, that shit is fucking scary!  I don't wanna go up against a tiger!

MMA is way more exciting and fast paced at the moment too compared to other sports

sorry, but i dont really want to spend 4 hours watching a football game that is only 1 hour of actual action. plus mainstream sports have lost alot of their meaning to me over the years as they get more commercial

fighting has ALWAYS been a part of a culture in some way shape or form
so MMA is not really a fad at all, only some of the aspects like those logo T-shirts and the octagon, etc.

its always been the best way to establish your manhood too
you want my woman, you want my food, you want my land, then take it from me by force!
it dont get no better than that

But how is it any different than being a professional boxer?

I mean with WWE wrestling its truly for entertainment purposes and you are like a fake athlete!

Grown men wanting to hug and roll around on the floor with other men.

I don't know, seems kind of gay.

I'd bet the level of latent homosexuality in that sport is beyond belief.

It's a world of difference, I watch boxing and think to myself about the kind of conditioning these guys are in and it's incredible of you think about it. The best stand up guy in MMA couldn't beat the worst professional boxer by a long shot in terms of skill. Also, look at the prize money, if the Pacquio/Mayweather fight would have taken place they both would have stood to make up to $45mil each. The highest MMA fighter in a high profile fight might make $1mil. When I saw the Pacquio fights all I could think about is "where in the hell would I begin to train a someone of that caliber". That being said I stay away from boxers.

When I was helping Jay Silva get ready for his fights, he did his boxing with a guy named Eric Brown, Freddie Roachs #1 trainer, we got an invite to watch a closed session spar and mits with Pacquio at Wild Card and OH MY GOD, I have NEVER seen anyone like Pacquio in my life as far as speed and power goes, honestly one of the highlights of my life as far as sports goes.

BTW, if you look at some of the pics I posted, Eric has been in the corner with us for every fight.

What says you Getbig?

Usually two different paths.

One, is you start early with some kind of traditional MA, and enjoy training Martial Arts, becoming more competitive as you grow and want to test your skills against others. It's like, wow i can finally make some money on something i enjoy and love doing.

Two, you have trained other physical sports earlier and feel you are both strong and tough enough to make an impact. You may not have any TMA-background, but you are no stranger to getting physical/fighting in general, so you give it a try to make some money, and you get to hurt people legally.

It's mostly either those two, either you have a background or you feel you are a physical specimen (tough, strong etc) that can make an impact, or you just plain like to hurt people/like to bang but don't want to get busted doing it.

Some "fighters" though, it feels like they're doing it just because they don't cut it on the football-field etc, easy money.

Why? Because it gives me the power to chocke out Bodybuilders. 8)

 It could be this:

1- Some have something to prove to  " someone or himself".

 2- Money.

3- The thrill "adrenaline". controlling your fear.

 4- All  of the above.

Some people are born to do those kind of things.

Example how many of you could jump off a plane in the middle of the sea to go to war?

How many of you could disarm a bomb?

Well for us wrestlers, after University MMA is the only vessel we have to utilize our wrestling skills and compete. We love competing. And the top guys are all millionairs, and the superstars like Chuck and Randy make close to 10 million a year. Even the low teir UFC guys make more than any IFBB pro.

Why would anyone want to be a Firefighter?

Why would anyone want to be a Military Soldier heading to Afghanistan?

Why would anyone want to be a Racecar-driver?

Why would anyone want to be a Chess-player?

Why would anyone want to be a Singer?

etc and so forth.

We all have things we enjoy and that we are good at.

Getting money to fight--- What straight, able-bodied, athletic male wouldn't want to make his living that way?

I would love to box or do MMA for a living-- Unfortunetly Im too old, out of shape and don't have the time to train that way.

If you have talent and can make a decent living doing something you enjoy, why not do it?

It's a ego thing. You can be the toughest man on Earth if you're the champion so to speak and even when you are not you are "tough"...and that is why so many do it. And is it a wonder fighters attract females? To be able to fight is to be fit and to be fit is to survive and to survive is to reproduce. Or something, I don't know.  ;D

Oh the irony. CHicks are drawn to fighters, even ugly fighters pull some decent tail. Chicks are repulsed by bodybuilders Schmoes are drawn to bodybuilding, go figure ::)

That's a good thought Klaus! It may have something to do with our basic and natural instincts just like seeing big tits and wide hips make us men want to reproduce.

Just something that's programmed in our brain from the start.

I can clearly see the connection:

Tough/Fit -> Survival -> Reproduction, just like it was back in the neanderthal-days.
