Yo-Yo Ma "Unaccompanied Cello Suite No.1 in G Major"

Or maybe I should just wait until I retire...but my cello is collecting dust.

Hmm, going back to school, taking drawing back up, lifting weights, this may take a back seat.

Classical music is very relaxing if it isnt to "choppy". The Cello is a nice instrument.

I didn't expect classic music lovers at this place. Yo-Yo Ma playing the Bach cantatas are masterpieces :)

I played the cello from 3rd grade up to my Senior yr in high school. Made All County. I've always liked it, because of it's mournful, melancholy, yet yearning tone...Or like I told one of my teachers, "because it looks like a woman!" ;D

DP, yes it is, yes it is. Yo-Yo Ma's Brazilian CD is good as well.

it'll be a while. My cello is actually with a female friend, she was going to use it to "get back into it", she never did. But I am tons of rusty.

I thought cantatas were sung.  Are they doing instrumental versions?

I listened to a lecture on Bach awhile ago.  The city and clergy of Weimar worked his ass like a dog, and he was obliged under contract to churn out cantatas at a pace which defied inspiration.  I like his fugues a lot, which seem to have been his passion, but never got into the cantatas.  Choral music never really turned my crank as a rule.

Vivaldi is another favorite and his complete works are out there for download.

Btw, I think there's only 5 or 6.  Most of these aging meatheads still reckon Metallica's Kill 'Em All is the pinnacle of man's musical achievement.  ;)

yes, Vivaldi was one of my favorites when I played, especially his Concertos. But what is funny, is that I enjoyed playing more than listening. When we used to go to competitions, I would fall asleep...unless it was a very riveting performance.

I have to admit that I don't consider myself an 'expert', I just love listening to good (not too commercial & mostly instrumental) classical music every once in a while.

Yes Yo-yo Ma did the 'vocals', for example the short cantata BWV 167.

And here is his most known piece, Bach´s Cello Suite No. 1, damn I love it :)

Bach 's cello partitas are absolute masterpieces. Pablo Casals' version is still a must have. As is Anner Bylsma's on a baroque cello is great also.

Yeah me neither.  I just like what I like.  A true aficionado would find me a poorly developed listener.  Never really got into anything beyond the classical period (ok maybe a little Chopin), atonality leaves me dead cold, and contemporary stuff I hear on the radio mostly sounds like a movie score to me.

I reckon you'd really dig some Vivaldi tho.  The Four Seasons is his best known but you really can't go wrong with any of his concertos.  He was big in our house when I was growing up tho so maybe I'm playing favorites.  I love some good Spanish guitar too.

I listen to a lot of instrumental Bossa Nova as well.
