The city must change the FDNY's hiring practices that discriminated against minority applicants and possibly pay damages to thousands of victims, a judge ruled Thursday.

In a written decision in federal court in Brooklyn, U.S. District Judge Nicholas Garaufis ordered the city to develop new exams for entry-level firefighter positions. He also said that about 7,400 minority applicants who were victimized by discriminatory exams were eligible to file claims against the city and that nearly 300 applicants should be given priority hiring status and retroactive seniority.

"The best thing for the city to do is to realize they're wrong and then to move forward with correction," said firefighter John Coombs who's also president of the Vulcan Society, a group of minority New York City firefighters. "The correction is to diversify the department and not a continuum of the old boy's club."

The order follows a decision by Judge Garaufis earlier this month that found the fire department had intentionally discriminated against blacks. The FNDY has about 350 black firefighters out of 11,500 total.

Coombs adds that city residents are the real winners, "City residents deserve that more than anyone else. The world has changed, the city has changed and the FDNY should want to change as well."

In a statement Thursday, an attorney for the city's Law Department, Georgia Pestana said "An initial examination suggests that today's opinion does not fully address the complex constitutional issues presented, nor does it give proper weight to developments in this area of law.''

The city is analyzing and weighing the decision, but has not yet decided if they will appeal.

Secondly the African American population in New York makes up over 80 percent of the population...so who is the MINORITY?

Third ..The exposure of the corruption and racism in Connecticut revealed what is going on in the Fire and police departments around america....deliberately elevating the test scores of white applicants while deliberately lowering the test scores of the African american and Hispanic applicants to keep the force...Eh hem..WHITE. I have always found it interesting though italians make up a small part of the population they are always the majority of people on the police force and fire department...Hmmm. What's up with the Italian police commissioner and fire commissioner. Rarely is that position held by someone whose last name does not have a lot of Os and Is in it.

Fourth.. now given the 'whiteness" of the police force in america where whites are the minority as well, I find it disturbing and amusing at the same time watching and hearing whites complain soooooooo much about white police brutality and whites killed by police. For a long time it was the African american and Hispanic population that complained and protested about always being shot at, arrested or abused and the Asian community complained of being harassed and shaken down. Now the focus is whites. Now whites are fearing walking out of their own homes, driving their cars, enjoying a night at a bar, riding their bikes calling the police for any reason or doing much of anything that have a consequence of receiving a ticket, beig arrested as well, being abused or being shot. The tables have turned indeed. Now whites will see and experience first hand what they once snubbed their noses at in regard to non-whites...It will not be pretty.
