No wonder they changed the name from “Eastern” to “Extreme.”

There’s an old saying that you never sell a potato from a fan.
But, Funk had the right idea how to get out of there while preserving his hardcore image – maybe the only way.
Check out at 0:19 – he just took a shot from one of the chairs, sold it, fell down, and rolled the hell out of the ring.

Foley chose to simply walk out.
I don’t blame either of them for one second.

I never seen this before. What exactly happened at that event? Did the fans throw chairs and riot?

I didn't start watching ECW until well after this incident took place, but it looks like Funk & Foley called for a chair.
Stupid idea with ~~crazy, fukking drunk~~ extremely passionate ECW fans. Did they really think the fans would just throw ONE chair?

I vaguely remember Foley discussing this incident in one of his books - I think it was Foley - maybe not.
Regardless, I don't recall what was even written.

I think I've read too much.
I guess I am a mark for wrestling books.

WOw...that's nuts. Imagine 20-30 some odd chairs flying into the ring? I started watching ECW in 1996. Tazz was champ and I used to like watching Mike Awesome & RVD.

Hard to tell in the vid, and I was not an ECW devotee in '94, but I think that might have been Public Enemy in the ring.

Anyway, looks like he threw the chair behind him & into the walkway leading to the back.
My God, can you imagine two wrestlers throwing a chair into an ECW crowd?
Those crazy fukkers would have torn that arena down brick by brick!

Leon, I'll post some good ECW clips for you sometime - from the ORIGINAL ECW; not that shit that McMahon shows on TV every week.
Meanwhile, if you don't already have it, try to get a copy of Have a Nice Day by Mick Foley, and at least read about his time in ECW.

ECW fans were true marks, they knew they were marks, and they were DAMN PROUD OF IT!
They were serious about their brand.
Probably the most dedicated, passionate, and loyal (at least, in their own warped minds) wrestling fans in North America.

I've only ever seen random clips from the older stuff, but I can imagine it was pretty hardcore. There are a couple of books on my list to get hold of, including Foley's, so I'll have to get onto that.

I started watching ECW around 97, I think, and after......it was incredible. The RVD vs Jerry Lynn matches were some of the best EVER. I remember when the Dudleys were leaving and they gave some long speech in the ring and Bubba Ray just totally went off on some fan at ringside. Classic.

ECW promos & vignettes were the best.
Many of them were more shoot than work.

But those fans appreciated & enjoyed it because they were the "smartest" fans of any promotion.
It's almost like they were a special breed of mark - never to be confused with the marks & smarks in WCW & WWF.

I believe that someone (either Tazz or ECW) had that moniker trademarked.
I remember when Mark Madden got in trouble for referring to Scott Steiner as "a human suplex machine" on a WCW broadcast.

Goldberg was just tremendous. He was / still is built like a freight train. His entrance was awesome. His only problem was that he was green. He actually hurt a few guys in the ring because he was sloppy.

And, I think that - because he was such a nice guy - none of his "victims" ever really stayed pissed off at him.
Even Bret, who suffered a concussion, conceded that Bill was very apologetic & sincerely sorry for what happened in their match.

That's right. Bill was one of the nicest and was also willing to learn behind the scenes.
