Whitfield is not expected to return for a second season. In June it was announced that Whitfield completely finished his treatment, had a clean bill of health and was expected to be back on the set of Spartacus: Blood and Sand by October. However, in September it was announced that Whitfield's cancer had returned and he would not be returning for the second season of Spartacus. Whitfield will make a brief appearance in the prequel mini-series Spartacus: Gods of the Arena, scheduled to premiere in January 2011.

Spartacus: Gods of the Arena is a Starz television mini-series and prequel to Spartacus: Blood and Sand, scheduled to premiere in January 2011. The series follows the character Gannicus (Dustin Clare), the first gladiator to become Champion of Capua. Cast members and characters being reprised from the original series include Lucy Lawless as Lucretia, John Hannah as Batiatus, Peter Mensah as Oenomaus, and Manu Bennett as Crixus. Andy Whitfield will make a brief appearance as Spartacus.

This is fucking bullshit. He's way to young for this crap. I'm sick of seeing young people get fucked by this shit.

I totally understand why he can't come back to the show and I hope the show comes back even without him and people support it anyway and in his honor. It might not come back, he'll be really hard to replace.

At this point I just hope that he beats this shit and gets better. This cancer crap is really starting to piss me off. I'm sick of this shit, why can't we start a real war on cancer instead of fighting retarded ragheads in caves...

Because if you have a cure, then that would mean less money for research and pet projects, more people will live longer---less productive lives....

I just saw a preview of the 2011 season on stars. All the scenes shown were from the first season. It was kind of a promo for the 2nd season starting in 2011. Did they find a replacement? I didn't know any filming for the second season had started?

Did they find a replacement for what, Spartacus? Neither the actor nor the character Spartacus will be in "Spartacus: Gods of the Arena." Whitfield will make only a brief appearance in the prequel.

no word as of yet. The good thing is they could cast someone that looks like him. They can put a mask and play on the theme of him recruiting others blah blah. I just want it back on the air damnit. It was one of the only shows I looked forward to watching every week

This was by far my favorite TV series I've watched since the Wire. I'd say it even surpassed the Wire for me. Season one was awesome. Spartacus and the guy who played him was great. I haven't watched something in a long time that was a really guy oriented series. Most other shit is geared toward fags, women or men who want to laugh. I tried watching Eastbound and Down because this gay guy at my work was raving about. Couldn't even watch the first epidsode. Spartacus was even better than 300.

It went into remission but came back. I was either Non or Hodgkin's lymphoma. Don't remember which. It's weid because that guy from Party of Five and Lost had the same thing. So did the actor from Dexter I believe.
