I don't think Pro bodybuilders get paid that bad
« on: January 31, 2010, 02:26:02 PM »
After watching the tennis and seeing the prize money i think it's pretty much on par for what the sport offers.

Maybe the top 20-30 tennis players can make good money (including sponsorhsip), outside of that they are travelling all over the world doing smaller tournaments all year and probably not making anything amazing.

Yes the top guys are killing it in tennis but for 18-20 tournaments a year, and the money drops off dramatically.

In bodybuilding you have the top 5 maybe doing pretty well and then a fair number in the top 20 doing ok. Amaters can even get sponsorship.

Bodybuilding has no-where near the viewers and is a one off show, a tennis tournaments can go for a week, 2 weeks for a major. Bodybuilders can also have another job while preparing.

People knock the amount that bodybuilders win but in this sport number 1 is number 1. In tennis there are multiple major tournaments, yes number 1 now has been there for many years but it can change over the course of a year. In bodybuilding you can have number 1 for 8 years and that's that.

For the viewers it gets, and that the guys only need to do 1-2 contest seasons (which yes the dieting is hard for months but still) i think it's on par with payment.

what are you smoking?

for the first round of a doubles match at the US open  you get 10K...doubles, which one watches and damn near every top player doesn't take part in it.  Any mediocre player can earn 5K without trying

Doubles (Per Team, Men & Women - 64 Draws)
Winners   $420,000
Runners-Up   $210,000
Semifinalists   $105,000
Quarterfinalists   $50,000
Round of 16   $25,000
Second Round   $15,000
First Round   $10,000
Total   $1,800,000 ($3,600,000)

I don't think that James Blake has ever won a tournament or ever will, but yet his earnings would allow him to buy the IFBB.

James Blake
Annual earnings: $7 million, Career prize money: $6.6 million
Blake’s ranking peaked at No. 4 in 2006 and he currently sits No. 23 on the men’s Tour. The drop has not deterred sponsors who like his good looks (he was featured in People’s "Sexiest Man Alive" issue) and his comeback from a 2004 season where he broke his neck, developed shingles and lost his father to cancer.

Here's a little insight: Top pro bodybuilders largest earnings aren't from competitions. It's sponsorships and appearances is where they make the good money.

I'm talking in comparison to the viewers that watch the sport compared to how many watch tennis. You still have to be picked to play in that doubles tournament.

Bodybuilders bitch and moan that there is no money but in comparison to what kind of attention they get at comps i think it's on par.

It's all the same with tennis (ok minus appearances). But in tennis how many guys are getting sponsored? How many in bodybuilding? Considering how massive tennis is to bodybuilding i think it's even, or bodybuilders get more considering how many active pros there really are.

My point is tennis is so massive and some guys can make massive amounts but not so far down the order they are maybe just making a decent amount when you take away travel, coaches etc etc.

James Blake was ranked 4th in the world at some stage, if you came 4th in the Mr.O you could do numerous appearances as well.

I don't know much about Golf, but doesn't even the 300th ranked Golfer make on par with Cutler, or something absurd like that.

Bodybuilding might have more cash then bowling or something, but not by a wide margin.

amateur bodybuilder = sponsorship from supplement manufacturer = 3 free jugs of protein

amateur tennis player = sponsorship from rolex/omega...jaguar etc. etc. = $2,000,000 a year or around there..plus free merchandise

Who are these amater tennis players (meaning they are playing in tournaments with no prize money) receiving that kind of sponsorship?

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Sheriff's investigators say that four people found dead in a Florida home that burned down had been shot.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said Thursday that autopsies were still being completed to determine how they died.

Col. Donna Lusczynski said the father who lived in the home bought a large amount of fireworks and gas cans on Sunday. Authorities say the Wednesday fire was intentionally set.

Lusczynski said it has still not been confirmed the bodies were Darrin Campbell, his wife and their two teens but they have not been accounted for.

The upscale home was rented by the Campbells and owned by retired tennis pro James Blake, who was not involved.

Golf is the richest individual sport for the top 100 by far.

Highest paid sportsman last year was Floyd Mayweather Jr who made over $114 million (if memory serves correct) but boxing as a whole doesn't have to many ultra-rich competitors.

If you want to make money in sport play golf.

It really isn't good, dude. The guys in BBing that made and kept money after retiring did it through creating SUCCESSFUL supplement companies (so, Labrada and Gaspari); purchasing and managing successful gyms (a handful); or investing the money in real estate (Jay).

The prize money except for the very top shows is meager. The costs of the drugs and food are high, not to mention plane tickets for guestposing. The supplement companies don't pay the same for everyone; the bigger you are, the more it is. But they're 2-3 year contracts. Doesn't last.

I'd also add that golfers in the top 150 make a lot more than top 150 tennis players. Outside top 150, tennis players make fuck all. On the challenger circuit you make €4k for a win. That's what most outside the top 100 compete in, these are the top 100 in a sport of 100 million, not the top 10 in a sport of 10,000. They compete every week, they have to pay (real) coaches.

That said, any "sport" where a significant number of athletes reduce themselves to doing g4p or gay posing sessions or drug dealing can't consider itself a breadwinner for many.
