Horrible experience while benching today
« on: February 12, 2010, 05:53:35 AM »
As I have said before new approach for this year and I am learning how to powerlift.
I have zero talent to lift heavy and always from the very first day I went to the gym concentrated fully on controlled lifting.
So atm I am benching twice a week and really try to find a way to increase my bench without drugs of course ;)
the past month I learned how to properly bench as in gripping the bar correctly and keeping it all tight which I hvae never done - its a lot of fun.

Since I am realy trying to increase my bench and challenge myself much more then I would have done before I need sometimes people to spot me - I know most of you getbiggers laugh at my personal best but I have nothing to hide and anybody who knows me knows I am not lying or exagerating.

So today I feelt real good - had a good sleep and feelt strong - my personal best is 105 Kilos 4 reps - so this time I though I will try to crack 110.
So I work my way up slowly to 105 kilos and asked one of the guys to spot me.
So I told him that I am shooting for my personal best and said to let me fight for it and only take the bar if I tell him to.
So off I go try to put all I have learned into practise.
Take the weight off - feels good - concentrate - force myself to bring it all the way down to the chest - wait for 1 second - then push it back up.
First half of the lift works perfect - I am already celebrating.
And just when I started to push real hard - the guy grabs the bar and lifts it up for me!!!!!
I wasn't even struggling!!!

I tried hard not to show my disapointment but I am sure I realy had it :(

Now rip me a new one for looking bigger then I can actually lift :D

yeah but fuck me I did explain to him how I want it done - and still.
So of course he felt sorry (he's by all accounts a cool guy) and said he will spot me again, but of course the next time I tried 10 min later I wasn't concentrating and there was no way for me to finish the lift.

Ah well I hope I get another chance - I stop when I can lift 6 plates - wonder if I ever manager that without drugs

Hm yeah I usualy don't ask people to spot me - I don't want to inconvenience anybody - but I broke my wrist last year and have a back problem so I just feal real uneasy pushing my max by myself.
Plus it usualy helps to have somebody actually spotting you - you get more out of it.

i know, you can push yourself further with a spotter, but i find it easier just to stop on point of failing. imagine the muscle mass thats still in store for me.

Spotting someone correctly is almost an art. Finding someone that can spot you correctly is nearly impossible. I usually ask the same people to spot me, because I trust them.
Most of the time I don't use spotters, but on the occasion that I do, and have to use somebody I have never met before that moment, I try to articulate to the them ask much as I can exactly what I need from them.

Damn shame he didn't press the bar down on your neck instead of pulling it up :)

Last week I was struggling with my last (muscle failure) rep on my last set on the incline bench, mother fucker I don't even know runs up and grabs it while I almost had it, I said "next time mind your own fucking business, I didn't ask for your help shit bag" but immediately felt like a dick afterwards, oh well.  8)

A guy asked me to spot him.  I wouldn't touch the bar unless it was on its way down.  So he was inching the bar up but I let him bring it all the way to the top.  He then racks and gets mad at me for not helping and how he wanted to do 5 more reps like he usually does with his buddy who normally spots him.  I guess his buddy must upright row the bar while this guy really beleives that he is pressing it.
Pathetic.

The "all you, bro" syndrome.

Ah yes, the "all you" syndrome. I almost thought it was mythical untill I witnessed it myself the other week. Tandem bent rows/ bench press. Must've been working negatives lol.

spotters are like women, you have to tell em what you like.

i tell the spotter there are only 3 words.

Go.  Stop.  Help.

And help means just take 5 or 10% off the bar and make me do the work.

Most people in the gym are irresponsible douches as it is, benching too heavy without collars, letting the potter move 90 pounds of weight, and as a rule I wouldn't trust them with a heavy bar over my head.
