Exactly the jab works because is unexpected , usually in a street fight you'll see dudes throwing haymakers and going wide ,that's why a quick jab to the nose will instantly disorient most untrained people, I always use the jab in street fights ,it throws your opponet off and it sets things up for a 3 or 4 punch combination..
Yes, the jab is a severely underrated punch even in organized fighting events. I set up a lot of attacks from the jab hence why it is called "the can opener" ....can't eat what is inside the can without a can opener.
Like I said earlier, the older guy trained somewhere to have confidence in his jab like that. The average person won't throw a jab at all. They'll sucker shot, hockey fight and/or wrestle.
