Study: NY, NJ To Pay 25% Of New Obama Health Tax

Comments (5) Feb 24, 2010 8:33 pm US/Eastern Study: NY, NJ To Pay 25% Of New Obama Tax
Marcia Kramer NEW YORK (CBS)

President Barack Obama's new health care plan really socks it to New York taxpayers and its bad news for residents of New Jersey and Connecticut, too.

The numbers are eye-popping. President Obama's plan to tax investment income to pay for his health care package would force New Yorkers to fork over an additional $4.8 billion in taxes on money they get from interest, dividends and other investments.

But here's the rub: a study by the Manhattan Institute finds that New Yorkers will pay 12 to 15 percent of all the funds raised by the new investment tax. New Jersey residents will pay 7 to 9 percent. That's nearly 25 percent of the entire tax.

The hit to area taxpayers is so staggering that experts wonder how our congressmen and senators can support it.

"It's like imagine a giant sucking machine taking dividend and interest income and sending it from New York to Washington, which is not a great thing at any time, but particularly if we continue to struggle economically in the state," said the Manhattan Institute's Steven Malanga.

The question is so politically volatile that a number of congressmen didn't return CBS 2 HD's calls to see if they support the president's plan, chief among them Congressman Charles Rangel, head of the tax writing Ways and Means Committee.

At least one Democrat broke ranks.

"Taxes on income, taxes, on dividends … we are a very high-cost state so we will pay a larger portion of that burden so I'd rather have a tax that's fairer, more across the board, something like taxing the profits of insurance companies I think is better," Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand said.

"This is a disaster for New York," Rep. Peter King, R-Long Island, said. "Of all the plans by the president this is one of the worst as far as the terrible impact and the damage it's going to do to New York."

If this tax is allowed to stand it will deepen the sea of red ink in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

The president also wants to increase Medicare taxes for couples who make over $250,000 -- another tax that hits our area harder than the rest of the country.

He is truly a piece of garbage I wish would just go the hell away.

Fuck that, when a thief comes for my cash, I am not going relax.  Obama is set on destroying this country and like I have said repeatedly, is a communist radical doing the bidding of the NWO, all with the acceptance of kneepadders like yourself too dumb, ignorant, and deluded to realize you are nothing more than a useful idiot for all of this.

I have. My wife and I make decent money. We have good jobs. Our taxes have gone up 17%, and and our home's value dropped 25% since 2009. So, who's seeing what? And what we are seeing is many of our friends are losing their jobs. I know someone just yesterday who was laid off at Sony Records. So, to say we are not seeing anything is pretty typical of liberals who don't like it when their messiah is questioned. They would rather down play the realities of this fool instead of identifying he is a disaster with three years left to screw us eveven further.  And to say because YOU are not seeing the difficulties people are living with each day is the same as screw Haiti because you don't live there. You know what I call you? A limosine Liberal.

Relax everything is fine. No new taxes, checks in the mail, stimulus is working like a charm, the new health "reform" is really in your best interest(really!), Everyone has a job. Economy is showing robust, self sustaining growth, the snow caused the rise in jobless claims, the Jobs Bill will work like a charm.  It is also ALL Bushes fault.

Settle down, have a drink as all of this is just make believe. Things are fine.

I think it is funny how many who voted for Obama wish for the days when Bush was president. When you truly don't know what you have until you don't anymore... I'm just saying.  :P

I can't begin to imagine how much more money Bush would have spent on bailouts.

Um. Where have you been? I didn't agree with Bush's bailout either. But to say he would have spent the 3 trillion Obama has planned is a joke.

The bailouts were/are a bad idea but probably did protect pensions in some cases. I really believe Bush would have included a tax cut so people would be better distracted but he would still have spent as much money or more.

333- I wish you'd post some links so we can look at the source material.  I can't find the study on their website (http://www.manhattan-institute.org/).  Withou more info my guess would be that there are simply more people in those two states have investment income.  I'm also wondering if any of this "new" tax is the sunsetting of the Bush Tax cuts (which was what ~ 1.5 trillion or so in lost revenue?).   Can you locate that study so I can read the details

Relax kid you're about to have a stroke!  :o

Besides my accountant always says "the higher your tax burden the more $$$$ you're making"  :D

I pay my business taxes quarterly (6 figures each) and you never hear me bitching.

Losers typically whine and bitch.  ;)

That's because you don't have a real business.  Your family just doesn't have the heart to tell you that the Pennsylvania Railroad you bought playing Monopoly the other night, isn't REAL!
