Nice try,  but when that happened neither Ebay or the internet were invented ..

Sly was an asshole with his fans until the mid 90's he "messed" with this little kid in Puerto Rico when he was filming with Banderas (cant remember the name of movie) thing is that the kid's dad was so influential in the industry, that about  a year later Sly ended up kissing both kids and dad's ass....even paying to fly them to Florida stay a weekend with him...DOUCHE  lol.

sounds like the dad and his kid are couple of lightweight whores.

Sly does sound like an ass. However, what kind of guy would bring a little girl to watch men beat the shit out of each other?

Well actually quite a few.  And mostly probably because of the celebrities that went and most of the time there is wasn't as secured as going to a big fight in Vegas.  The old guy who was maybe 40 if that was the girls dad I am sure.  Also Sly is the worst tipper.  He will actually ask how much is 15% of whatever the price of the bill is.  I am pretty sure this doesn't happen all the time.  But, then again he was cheap enough to be sure to bug me or have someone else bug me to get him a free pair of Vuarnet glasses.  At the time I was sponsored by them and I got alot of the crew and cast a free pair.  Well he wanted the expensive Aviator pair.  I got him back though when he left a fancy pair of glasses on a table and I took them.  here is a picture with them on below.  Made me look smart.  They are clear but were cool and expensive.  Can't remember the brand but it was a fancy french name.

The first pic is me on the set with a pair of Revos.  When Vuarnet didn't renew my contract I called Revo up and they signed me.  I gave the crew Revo and got them in the movie too

I would say 5'7"  Chuck Norris is 5'7" cause that is what he told me.  My old business partner Heisman trophy winner Mike Garrett is exactly 5'7".  When I introduced them they shook hands and at the exact same time said "I thought you were taller"/  That was funny.  Sly wears funny shoes all the time.  I was in the restroom with him once and looked down and saw them.  So I don't know exactly how tall he is but if I was to guess it would be 5'7".

Actually Mejia I was talking about now (please reread), not in the past before the internet or Ebay. Though even back than collectors would buy autographs from actors, athletes, etc, that other people got from them. Can be an extra cash flow business for some.

Wonder if stuntmovie would mind giving out his age? Rita Hayworth was many moon's age. Had some clips of her in film class once. Kind of hot in a 1940's kind of way. Did classic Spanish dancing and use her original Spanish name before movie work. Just to add, heard that stunt people are the wild bunch of the movie business.

JPM, I'm an old fart from way back but never had a problem keeping up with "kids" 40 years younger than myself and can easily complete an hour's worth of aerobics without tiring - but it sure gets boring.

When my recon buds got out of the Corps scuba diving was becoming popular among the Hollywood set so a couple of them got invited to work at Universal Studios (this was way before they opened the Universal Studios Park) and when they weren't doing water work, they were falling horses and roping horses out in the San Fernando valley when most of that valley was horse and farm land.

My best USMC bud (Jack Tyree) was one of those guys who everyone loves and so he was asked by some of the Universal stars of that time to teach them how to scuba dive in one of the pools in the valley.

As a result of the classes he gave, he became close to most of the top stars in the movie business and knowing how much I liked the movie business he would invite me to Hollywood to meet his new found friends. (At that time I was stationed at Camp Pendleton so it was only a short drive north.)

A short while later a group of the guys who were starring in The Virginian TV show asked Jack if he would join the gang in forming a Scuba School to train all the stunt people who were working in motion pictures ... so Jack became a partner with the likes of Jaqmes Drury and Doug McClure and a few other TV stars whom most of you have never heard of.

And then Jack was a background character in The Virginian because he couldn't act worth a shit.

Then they encouraged Jack to take acting lessons and that's where he met Goldie Hawn and if I recall the story correctly, each of them made a promise to each other that if one of them made it big in the movies, he or she would 'pull' the other with him/her.

So Goldie made it big and Jack started appearing on the silver screen in small but noticeable roles. And since he was a great guy he had the run of the lot at Universal and would invite me whenever I had liberty to watch them film the major TV shows of that time.

I forget the names of most of those old shows but one day James Garner saw Jack walk on the set and he flubbed his lines while trying to acknowledge Jack.... and he flubbed those lines about 9 times because there was one unfamiliar word he had to used and it totally threw him off.

Finally he got it right and he walked right over to us and said, "Damn, Jack! I'm sorry we had so many retakes but that line threw me. But I'm glad you waited because I want you to be in the next movie we're making. Who the hell is your agent?"

Jack never had an agent because everyone knew him anyway. So Jack gave Jim his number and within a month he was working on Stage #X (the hughest stage at Universal that housed the life size ship that was used in Mutiny on the Bounty and many other major films).

There was a popular book back then about a bear and her cub that were burnt in a forest fire and grossly disfigured but lived and were attacking campers  (Prophecy??) and Jack had the "bear" part and wanted me to play some minor role in that movie, but I had to turn it down due to MC obligations, so I missed my big career making opportunity.

Then he wanted me to play a small part in some Prince Valient type movie but again, the Corps came first But I did have the opportunity to go on set and play in a huge foam rubber castle and swing swords on the huge round table that all the knights sat around with some of the principal characters who starred in that movie.

Jack and Anthony Quinn were good friend also and Jack acted as one of his Indian sons in one of those movies. Also a good part in some little whorehouse movie and "How the West Was Won" and the original Planet of the Apes, among a shitload more

Then one day I was visiting and Jack gets a call from one of the major studio owners. Jack had gotten his son out of trouble more than a couple of times and this studio ower would call on Jack if an actor was causing trouble and had to be 'corrected' in a private manner (meaning the newspapers could not get involved.)

SO we go driving off into the Hollywood Hills and Jack stops his car in one of the best mansions up there and asks me to wait as he'll only be a second. And maybe 30 seconds later he comes out of the mansion with an Oscar in his hands asking me to hold it for a while.

And he goes back inside and twenty minutes later he comes back out and asks for the Oscar back and takes it back inside.

When he got back to the car I asked him, "What was that all about!"

He was sent to the house because a major actor was threatening to hit his major actress wife and when Jack got inside, the actor became irate and ran off to get some sort of a weapon. When he left the room Jack saw the Oscar on the mantel and thought, if I was him I'd use that to try to hit me with. SO he brought that Oscar outside so it couldn't be used as a blunt instrument.

So he goes back inside and the actor is a bit worried now and says,"Sorry" and convinces Jack that he is calm now and that all is well. And the wife agrees, so Jack leaves and never had to go back again because that actor never worked at that studio any more.

Jack and his studio friends started two of the major stuntmen's associations in Hollywood. I think that the first was Stunts Unlimited and I forget the other's name. I visited their present day office a couple of years ago but all the old timers I had known back in the good old days were either dead or retired and only one young kid had heard of Jack Tyree because his dad had worked with him several times in the past.

Jack died while making a jump in Topanga Canyon during the filming of the Sword and the Sorceror. And there's a strange story there but this has been too long already. Maybe later if there's any interest.

How about playing cards in Errol Flynn's secret hide-a-way?

Or  "stealing" whatever was needed on Friday nights to make motorcycle movies on the weekends and returing it before it was found missing on Monday mornings?

Sorry, got off track there a bit.....

Rita Hayworth was originally Margarita Carmen Cansino  (I had to look that on up).

Here's a PHOTO ...

JPM, I overlooked a direct answer about the Stunt guys being the wild bunch in the movie industry.

I can certainly attest to the fact that they definitely were the 'wild bunch' back in those days. Even to the point where they had to own their own shit-kicking bar somewhere on Ventura Blvd when there wasn't too damn much on Ventura Blvd.

This kick-ass, sawdust floored, plank of a bar was frequented by some of Hollywood's finest in front of and behind the camera and it was impossible not to have a good old time.

And I often heard conversations when everyone agreed that the only people in Hollywood who were worth knowing and could be trusted were the stunt guys and stunt gals.

But lately I hear that has changed significantly due to the competition and back-stabbing involved in getting decent employment. Don't know that for a fact though.

It's amazing how the rich and famous EXPECT free shit.  I was basically a nobody but at times I got to do quite a few pretty neat things.  And with that you get alot of free stuff, people waiting on you with hand and foot and they make you feel pretty important.  it is kind of cool getting the same stuff free and your own personal assistant when you do some of the fancy celebrity gigs.  Most of the time I felt out of place but everyone always made me feel right at home.  I made friends pretty easy with everyone.  Most of the time the ice breaker was people just wanting to feel my arms.  Kind of cool

Ok, thanks for reading all these old memory stories and requesting more. I hope I'm not hogging this board but since you asked ......

I bet that "rooftop" story from Keith was World Gym in Venice.  I didn't read that particular post from Keith but when anyone says "rooftop" in conjunction with "gym" it more than likely is Joe Gold's World Gym in Venice right next to the Santa Monica border.

This is sort of a continuation of a previous post I've written earlier ...... (see above someplace)

So now Jack Tyree is very well known in the stuntmen's business and well liked and respected within the Hollywood movie business and I was invited to be his best man at his wedding to Cindy in the recently constructed underwater filming tank at Universal but I was off in some far  off land so that best man under the water function was impossible so another friend "jumped in" for me.

It was an underwater wedding held at Universal with wet suits somewhat designed to look like tuxedos and it made some of the front pages in the west coast newspapers and throughout the world. I think it was the first time that was ever done, so it was considered newsworthy.

Shortly after that I got back to Camp Pendleton and once again found myself visiting the studios doing one thing or another. Jack was either appearing in front of the camera or helping some major player get in or out of trouble, or simply there to encourage a friend who was reading for a major role.

Jack was a bit over 6 feet tall and Don Adams of the Get Smart TV series was considerably shorter but one day Jack was asked to do some stuntwork on behalf of 'Agent 86' but once they all showed up on set
(the 'set' was that breakaway bridge you may have seen on the Universal Back-lot Tour) everyone started laughing because Jack and Don were complete opposites. How could they ever convince the TV fans that Jack was really 'Agent 86' hanging/falling off that bridge? So once the laughter died down, the director says something like "faraway shot" or "long range shot" and the whole crew picks up and moves out and sets up in a very professional manner off that bridge and down the road apiece. That long distance shot would fool the  TV fans and make them believe that Don was really doing something hazardous (actually nothing more than falling straight down a few feet).

So after "Cut!" everyone thanked Jack and Jack thanks 'em back and some down-the-line producer gives Jack a towel and new clothes and directions to the nearest portable shower (they treated stuntmen like royalty back then).... and when he's all cleaned up and back in order he says, "Let's go. We got a meeting with my guys and you'll enjoy meeting them!"

So we drive off the lot after a short verbal exchange with the gate guard who always enjoyed talking to Jack even when it stalled some big time star waiting to get out behind us.

And we drive up the road a bit (it don't look nothing today like it did back then) and we turn into an old but very impressive small neighborhood of bungalows that looked like they were built by Disney for the Seven Dwarfs. I mean - they were very old, very small, and very impressive.

So we park and go inside one of these small homes and a bunch of guys are in a semi-heated conversation around a breakfast table. I inititally thought that they were in a heated game of poker and had caught one of the players with the Ace of Spades up his sleeve, but I soon discovered that I was wrong and that this was the norm when stuntmen were making movie plans.

So swift first name introductions are made and I'm made to feel completely welcome and offered to get myself a beer or anything I wanted from the kitchen and they all return to a very heated discussion.

So I get myself a beer and make myself comfortable in the adjacent living room and check out the surroundings. All the furniture is nice but very old and there are scripts on every table top and all over the couch and chairs. So I pick one up and start reading the attached 'synopsis' and it's a script about a gang of motorcycles guys and gals vs some sea monster coming ashore at some amusement pier north of San Diego.

By page five I'm bored so I put it back and then notice some paintings on the walls. They look out of place in this little bungalow but then I notice that one is signed by a famous artist of long ago. And the others are all signed too by famous artists I've long forgotten, but they were definitely museum pieces and seemed inappropriate in their present surroundings.

So the stunt guys take a break and the bungalow owner checks to make sure that I'm OK and notices that I'm interested in the art work and says, "They belonged to my dad. They're originals."

And I say, "Who was your dad? Nelson Rockerfeller??!!"

He laughed and said, "No! He was Errol Flynn. He was an actor."

"Wow! Are you kidding me!?'

"No! I'm Sean by the way." ... and shook my hand. "Come on and join us and we'll show you what we're doing."

So into the fray I entered.

(Memory is slipping a bit but the above is pretty accurate.)

Next up ..... What's up? What the hell are these guys up to?!

Yes is the outside part of the Original World Gym.  It was neat getting tan and training at the same time.  The gym was built on the second floor above a ground level parking lot.

Love the story, Stunt. Errol was a real movie star. Probably the handsomest man to hit Hollywood, and he was also a way better actor than people gave him credit for because of those looks. He really was good. Too bad his insecurities and demons took such a toll. I've read his bio 'My wicked, wicked ways,' but I've not read his earlier book called 'Beam Ends' - he was a real avid sailor. Oh, and I know Olivia de Havilland is still alive, if you can believe it. I think she lives in Paris. What a dame.  :)

Thanks for that. Doc! I didn't mention it yet but I will do so as I continue, but that little bungalow was referred to as "the love nest" on more than a couple of occasions.

And I'm really surprised that Olivia de Havilland is still among the living. Never did meet her but thanks for that info. I did meet Rosalind Russell outside of the sound stage once and I think she was just about the same age as O de H. Maybe a few years younger.

Also met but did not carry on a conversation with Barbara Stanwyck when she was appearing in some recurring western TV show. What amazed me on that occurance was the set which was built inside the sound stage. It was a life sized grass covered hill with cattle coming over the top towards the campfire where the "cowboys" sat around speaking lines from the script.

During breaks we'd talk and I must have been at least 6 inches shorter than the shortest 'cowboy' on that set ... and I'm 72 inches tall.  (that makes this posting valid for this topic).

It was somewhat wierd that the 'cowboys' were so tall because the principal actors seldom liked to have anyone appear teller than they themselves were. But this was a Stanwick show, so she probably made those decisions.

BTW ... Only Me worked with Ms Stanwick. For you young guys, she was the top actress of her time and a close friend of Joe Valdez. And if you have to ask, "Who is Joe Valdez?", you're definitely not with the program.

Keith,
Have you ever considered doing some consulting work behind the camera?
You're in Vegas now?

Stunt,
Sorry if you've mentioned this elsewhere, but are you still active in the industry?
I've noticed that occasionally you post info about auditions, etc.

Great stories, guys.
Looking forward to more...
Please keep them coming!
