I’m usually able to keep a pretty opened mind.
And, I’m sure I’m in the minority here, but I could never see what the big deal was with Dusty Rhodes.

I highly doubt that this can be written without sounding disrespectful, so I’ll preface it by saying that I have the utmost respect for the success that Mr. Rhodes accomplished during his career.

Unfortunately, I fail to grasp exactly why he had that success.

I’ve watched his interviews from down south.
I watched his work in WWF.
I even made it through most of a match he had with Abdullah the Butcher in Japan.

Aside from not looking like someone who any state athletic commission would even clear to wrestle, the peroxide afro, pasty white skin, and raccoon eyes did not help his physical image.

His mic skills seemed good, but nothing extraordinary that would put him above guys like Jake Roberts and Bill Eadie.

And while people are quick to criticize the limited ring repertoire of guys like Hogan, Warrior, Rock, etc., the only “move” the Dream had was that elbow.
In the match he and Butcher did in Japan, Rhodes’ main offense consisted of bites and elbows.

Again, I'm not arguing with his success.
I'm simply at a loss to understand how he came across the success he did.

He was great on the mic and had charisma, but the lisp is what put him over the top.  I could listen to him talk all day.

Really though, a lot of the guys from that era had similar physiques as Dusty, but with far less mic skills.

He was Flairs arch rival. Much like Biggy was Tupac's.

We know Chef Tim is a Federation fan. Don't know anything about Dusty until he came to the Federation. He didn't do anything there. The whole act with the poka dots and Saphire was completely dumb. I never enjoyed him once. This guy was never a superstar in my eyes.

I can't imagine where Vince thought that was going to go.

Jesse Ventura used a great line during one of Dusty’s matches:

"Rhodes entered a bodybuilding contest and won not the award for best abs – he won the award for MOST abs!"

Ricky was only in the NWA for 5 minutes!   Remember when Lex went Roid Rage on Steamboat?  "Come on Ricky lets go."

I was never a big Dusty fan, but he did have a persona and played it to a tee, and that persona was a perfect contrast to Ric Flair's.

The Workingman vs. The Elitist

IMO, that angle would still work, today.

Steamboat got dicked around by promoters & bookers in both organizations.
That's part of the reason he was back and forth so many times.

He worked a few different programs with Flair over the years, all of which are regarded as some of the best matches of all time - probably the 1989 series being the most notable.
But they were all with Crockett/WCW.

His last run with Vince saw him wearing a fukking Dragon costume complete with scales & tail.

You're right.
I think a lot of the success of that had to do with the scenario.

Dusty’s character didn’t have that same magic with everyone.
Flair – yes.
Dusty – no.
Hence the demise of the polka dot era.

I think Dusty held Saphire back.

The American Dream's success was largely due to the era he was in.  People wanted to see the underdog succeed and Dusty played up the "common man, son of a plumber" angle better than anybody ever has.  I remember Flair saying in a shoot that when he and Dusty were fueding in the 80's, Dusty showed up to a TV taping in a suit trying to outdress Flair.  Flair told him to never do that, it broke the connection with the average fan.  And he was right.  Dusty didn't do it again.

Something that can't be overlooked with his success is that he was very smart behind the curtain.  Often being a booker for his own matches, etc...  I think he was a decent worker, for that time period, because his ring psychology was excellent.  And he almost always bled like a stuck pig.  Flair was one of his worst critics for booking himself as the top face, but in a recent interview I saw where Flair basically said Rhodes was right.  Notice Dusty was almost always "chasing the dream" but it was always pulled from his grasp at the last second.

His mic skills were so unorthodox.....here was a "man of the people" who although white, talked like a black pimp, often dressed like one, had a lisp, bleached blonde fro and often talked of being a cowboy.  He played an excellent foil to Flair's "born with a silver spoon" image.

Dusty appealed strickly to the Mid-Atlantic / NWA crowd. Fans loved him because he was the "Common Man" and appealled to the average person. He was the ultimate protagonist and his fued with flair lasted over a year which lead to some memorible matches.

Vince could have used Dusty in a much, much better way in his 1990 1 year WWE run. He chose not to and we all know why. Not a Vince creation. Otherwise he could have had a much better run. His match at WM6 should NOT have been a mixed tag match. It would have been better had they fought one on one.

Thanks.

I can remember wrestling promos over 20 years old, but, when I'm searching for something on the internet, half the time, I get distracted and forget what I was searching for.

Go figure.
