Idea that would make the UFC more exciting
« on: March 04, 2010, 01:47:35 PM »
I am sure I'm not the first person on here who thought of this-- but why doesn't the UFC have any grand prix tournament type events the way Pride and the old UFC used to?

I was walking around Best Buy last week and saw the Pride 2006 grandprix on DVD. It was 12.99 and had some of the most compelling fights and high drama I have ever seen watching MMA. Cro Cop knocking out Wanderlei, Barnett getting a split decision victory over Nog, then Cro Cop and Barnett having an epic brawl.

I feel like it would create more exciting matchups and eliminate the need to have the champs in their respective divisions constantly fight chumps just so they can have title defenses. Also, a tournament format would possibly give guys who are not at the top of the food chain the opportunity to prove themselves and get their names out there.

Athletic commissions would never allow these tournaments due to fighter safety. Even with a regular 3 or 5 round fight now, if someone gets knocked down or out, they many times are handed at least a 30 day suspension.

Sucks though, but I can understand it.

I'm thinking more along the lines of a tables, ladders, and chairs thing.  Or how about a dog collar match.
