OTTAWA — Prime Minister Stephen Harper has finally scored his Olympic hockey beer from U.S. President Barack Obama.
U.S. Ambassador to Canada David Jacobson delivered on Friday morning a case of Molson Canadian to Harper at 24 Sussex Drive — making good on Obama's losing bet that the American men's hockey team would win gold at the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver.
Obama and millions of North Americans glued to televisions on Sunday, Feb. 28 found out "no they couldn't" when Sidney Crosby scored an overtime goal to give Canada a thrilling 3-2 gold-medal game victory.
Jacobson also delivered a case of Obama's favourite beer — Yuengling, a product that ostensibly comes from America's oldest brewery in Pottsville, Pa.
Harper says he will donate his winnings to the Hockey Hall of Fame, which Thursday welcomed the puck Crosby shot past American goaltender Ryan Miller to clinch Canada's record-setting 14th gold medal at the Vancouver Olympic Games.
Friday's beer run doesn't represent the first time the White House has lost an Olympic hockey bet.
On March 12, White House spokesman Robert Gibbs was forced to don a Team Canada hockey jersey during a White House news briefing, making good on a bet with Harper spokesman Dimitri Souas over the Olympic hockey men's final.
The cheeky Gibbs only wore the jersey for about two minutes and drew laughter and applause from the White House press corps when he removed it to reveal a Team USA hockey jersey.
Canada won the gold... canada won the gold.
