Empty stomach cardio vs. protein drink before morning cardio
« on: March 21, 2010, 09:51:12 PM »
I know the consensus is to do cardio in the morning before breakfast when glycogen stores are relatively empty but after morning cardio I would like to drive straight to work and not go back home for a protein shake or bring it with me an try mixing it at the gym so if i take my protein shake right before I leve home and 15 minutes later BAAAM start doing cardio for 60 minutes will the protein shake be used partly as energy during cardio and less fat loss as energy or does it take longer to digest such that it doesnt matter whether I take the protein shaek immediately before cardio or not.  Its BSN

Maybe the OP should PM the guru.  I'm sure he'd just need a few fully nude pics before dispensing advice.   :-X

Or ANYONE for that matter, who does not fully grasp or understand the medical science on human physiology, nor have associates, bachelors and masters degrees in exercise science, from a university that has one of the best exercise sciences post graduate programs in the country. Not to mention being a personal trainer for at least 6 years, having held no less than 2 nationally recognized & accredited Personal Training certifications!

Is mixing up a shake after cardio really that much hassle? It's not hard to drink a shake on that drive to work.

I think empty stomach cardio is a case of mis-labelling. I think most folk who do this time of cardio take in a shake mixed with water or BCAA's pre-cardio.

so the BCAAs before cardrio is ok but you think taknig a protein shake right before empty stomach cardio is counterproductive ok maybe that make sense but what if its just whey isolate with water 180 calories 46 grams of protein and BAAAM yOU Do cardio just 15 minutes after chugging the drink then take some carbs after the cardio  what u think now? are you still gettig the benefit of empty stomach cardio or does the whey isolate drink get used up as calories during the cardio instead of the fat?

Okay smartass, I will rephrase with better puncutation.  I intend on doing morning cardio to try the theory that cardio is best for fat loss first thing in the morning as glycogen stores are most empty at that time.  Since I work in the morning like most people, I can do cardio on my way to work and then eat something while I drive from the gym to work.  As I find it inconvenient to eat meat while driving, or to mix a protein drink while I drive and worry about cleaning the cup afterwards too, I was thinking of taking a protein drink right before I leave my home for the gym, then arrive and start cardio fifteen minutes later.  So the question is, will taking that protein drink (even if its whey isolate with zero carbs and zero fat) 15 minutes before I start cardio negatively effect the goal of doing cardio on an  empty stomach?  I would think the drink would not immediately digest and be used for energy and instead I will still tap into fat stores for energy during the morning cardio session.  What do you think?

Is it really that tough to make a protein shake on the way from the gym to your truck?  Or are you worried you will spill it on your overalls on some backwoods gravel road?  ;D

I wouldn't want the sand in the wind and my overralls to spill in the drink  ;D

No but really the water in the gym is not not very cold which would make a warm protein drink and I don't like the idea of bringing a shaker cup then washing it when I get to work or chugging it at the gym and washing it in the sinks theree besides doesnt one look like a douche for making a protein drink at the gym anyway oh and no punctuation meltdown  ;D

I'm just bustin' chops.....I used to make one at the gym, but most of the guys did at that gym, it was a REAL gym....it was kind of a pain to wash it a work.

I think you've improved but still have some work to do.  These books might help:

;D  On a more serious note, drink the shake.  I've always felt cardio on a completely empty stomach is too catabolic.  I always have a shake prior to doing a session.
