It is sad that your friend passed away, but you need to develop a thicker skin--yesterday!  I have taken my share of abuse here; more than you will ever know as most of it happened long before you registered here.  I dealt with it (mostly by ignoring it).  I took the lickings… and kept on ticking… and in so doing I earned the grudging respect of even some of the guys here who hate me.  Life is full of immature assholes; you need to learn to deal with this because they are not going away anytime soon.  Let me give you a tip: one of the most potent things you can do to someone is completely ignore them...

In case you haven’t learned it by now, this is not the place to show vulnerability and find succor.  Save that for private messages, or better yet, for the people in your life who really matter.

Well, we were talking about the difference between doing an MA and a PhD and some of the reasons so many PhDs remain unfinished. Primarily (he said) because the level of personal responsibility and engagement is much, much higher than it is for an MA. I realise from personal experience he was right.

News to me, anyway we don't have a mandatory draft so those who are fighting are doing so on their own freewill regardless of why or what they are fighting for. I have way more sympathy for those in the military fighting and dying for what they believe in rather than distubia's friend who did not appreciate life and is probably better off dead.

True, no draft but many of the kids in the military join out of desperation to escape gut wrenching poverty and horrible life circumstances. Just a means to escape and sometimes a means to a young death in the name of nothing.

No, but leaving Korea definitely helped.

It was unfortunate I got to know getbig when I was there because I was not myself there; that place changed me for the worst. It took over a year to recover from that...and now I am better...or at least pretty zen.
