If there's one place in the whole nation that you should absolutely be allowed to exercise your second amendment rights it's Washington D.C.

It's scary to think that in the capital of our nation one of our most important constitutional rights can be blatantly violated.

More women may be turning to firearms
The Washington Times ^ | 30 March, 2010 | Kristin Volk and Joseph Weber

Posted on Tuesday, March 30, 2010 8:01:57 AM by marktwain

American women are buying guns and taking aim on firing ranges in growing numbers, according to a recent study and interviews with gun-shop owners.

A 2009 study found 70 percent of shop owners reported more female buyers.

The study, conducted by the National Shooting Sports Foundation and Southwick Associates, also found 80 percent of the female gun-buyers who responded said they purchased a gun for self-defense, followed by 35 percent for target practice and 24 percent for hunting.

Women and shop owners interviewed by The Washington Times offered similar, narrow-ranging explanations for the increases — largely self-defense and concerns about the possibility President Obama would further restrict gun ownership.

Erika Gonzalez, of suburban Washington, was raised as a Quaker and grew up thinking guns were unsafe — until a series of life-changing events.

Her grandmother was murdered about 15 years ago in a small town, then her marriage fell apart and she was on her own.

"I was very anti-gun for a long time … and I guess my thinking evolved on that," said Ms. Gonzalez, who owns a Glock 9mm and started a shooting club to practice and share similar interests. "I was probably motivated to buy the gun because I separated from my husband and was living alone."

Hilary Gotzh, a single 26-year-old, wants to buy a gun this year for protection and recreational uses, but, like Ms. Gonzalez, thinks ownership is a private and personal decision.

"It's not a common thing that women sit around tea and talk about their firearms," Ms. Gotzh said.

Why should i have that right?  No good can come of owning 1000 guns.  I believe there should be a limit of how many you can and should own.  I also believe there should be a limit on what you can and can not own.  I'm not a fan of automatic weapons at all.  I don't believe any civilian should be able to legally own one.

Why not?  What if I keep them locked up in a safe or I am a collector?  What if my grandfather has a huge collection and wills them to me after his death?

KC why are you so anti-freedom?  Seriously bro - every issue you keep begging for more govt control of your life.

I'm not anti-freedom at all.  For the average citizen they shouldn't be allowed to just own any gun they please.  You have the right to a gun but what that gun is is a matter to interpretation.  I don't believe you have the right to any gun you wish it's that simple.  A gun yes, an AK47, no.

As for a gun collector i can see you point, perhaps in those circumstances an allowance can be made but it is far from the norm.

Why do you own it?  What purpose can it hold other than to kill a man or waste ammunition pretending to kill a man?  It is a waste of metal and time and like i said no good can come of automatic rifles in civilian hands.

How about its none of your damn business?   I have no criminal history or record whatsoever, I have a full pistol permit under NYS law for which I went through NRA classes and checks with the FBI, etc.

So what is the problem?

How many crimes in this nation are committed with AK's?  Answer?  Next to none.

Exactly.  That's the kind of mentality that believes you can own property and make money, but not too much.

I don't care how clean your record is, i will never support civilians with automatic weapons.  Simple as that.  You can justify it to yourself but all you are holding is a gun with no other purpose than to kill people.  It's sad you are so scared you feel the need to buy such a gun.  Perhaps you should change your lifestyle if it's so dangerous you need such protections.

Its a semi-auto the same way a Ruger 10/22 is.

BTW - LHO killed Kennedy with a bolt action rifle.  Should we ban those too?

YES!

Our right to bare arms is extremely necessary to the security of our (once) "free State".

"the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed"  That wording is extremely simple, it's absolutely no bodies business how many (or what kind) weapons you own.  Especially not the government which the second amendment is designed to keep in check.

The court then held that the Second Amendment "protects an individual right to keep and bear arms", saying that the right was "premised on the private use of arms for activities such as hunting and self-defense, the latter being understood as resistance to either private lawlessness or the depredations of a tyrannical government (or a threat from abroad)."
