Iraq: The Wrong Type of Sand
« on: April 01, 2010, 10:40:04 AM »
YEP...You heard it right folks...american spent tons of money importing sand to Iraq, because Iraq's sand was deemed "THE WRONG TYPE" for building walls. OK...My bullshit tolerance meter has just fallen off of the wall.... But I guess you are all glad you are paying for this with YOUR TAX DOLLARS

Iraq: The Wrong Type of Sand

By STEPHEN FARRELL
March 31, 2010, 9:00 pm
New York Times

CAMP ARIFJAN, Kuwait — On the very long and expensive list of materials that the American military had to ship to Iraq since 2003, and is now shipping out many of them again, one might not have expected to find sand.

Yet there it is.

This might seem strange for a country that is 10 parts sand to 1 part water, 1 part oil and 0.1 parts electricity. Counterintuitive. Absurd, even.

However, American commanders overseeing the drawdown of forces and equipment currently under way from Iraq confirm that Iraqi sand was deemed inadequate for the blast walls that have become perhaps the defining visual feature of post-invasion Baghdad and other cities, stretching for mile upon mile around government ministries, airports, military bases and other important buildings.

So, at no little cost, boatloads of more resilient desert had to be floated in from other countries — namely the United Arab Emirates and Qatar. And not just for blast walls.

“When you start to ask why does it cost what it cost for this war, you are like: ‘Hey, when we build a wall in the United States it only costs you about $1,500 dollars, why are you paying $3,500 or $5,000?’ ” said Maj. Gen. Phillip E. McGhee, director of resource management for the U.S. Third Army during an interview at Camp Arifjan last month. “And so we were going, ‘Well, that’s a great question.’”

“And then you look to see that based on the specs that we have for blast walls, it takes a particular grain and quality of sand. That sand is not in Iraq, so you have to bring the sand in. So that sand actually has to get on barges down in U.A.E., down in Qatar, has to come all the way up here, gets processed through there. You can either do one of two things, you can make the concrete, or you can just bring the sand up into Iraq.”

It’s the same story on bottled water for troops in Afghanistan, he pointed out, because of the lack of capacity to bottle water locally. The water has to be shipped into Pakistan via the port of Karachi and then spends 17 days on the road to Afghanistan. “We pay 45 cents for a bottle of water in Iraq,” he said. “We pay $2.50 for that same bottle of water in Afghanistan.”

That water was also imported to Iraq – the Land of the Two Rivers – after the 2003 invasion is old news to anyone who has seen the crates of Kuwaiti and Saudi mineral water in Iraqi shops.

Even gasoline had to be imported to the nation sitting atop some of the world’s biggest oil reserves, because of the perilous state of security, and Iraq’s oil industry in the years immediately following the war.

But sand?

General McGhee provides the engineering rationale: “This isn’t a wall that you would just put on an interstate some place. These are blast walls, so they have to be reinforced steel. They are real specific about what type of concrete, and the strength of the concrete. And the sand that is up there did not meet the specs for those blast walls, so you have to find the sand elsewhere.”

His colleague Brig. Gen. John O’Connor, the Third Army’s director of logistics, said the problem went beyond vertical concrete slabs.

“The same goes for laying in airstrips, the same goes for laying down roads,” he said. “It has to meet certain standards.

“Our engineers, they go in and do all of the tests, they sample the soil and the sand in order to make a certain composition, so that it will sustain the weight and requirements of whatever it is that we have to do, whether it is put a wall up to protect a soldier in his living quarters, to laying a runway down for an aircraft to land on, or to traverse using vehicles. There are certain regulations that say it has to meet a requirement of protection.”

Whatever the cost of manufacturing the blast walls in the first place, the planners say there is now little point in moving them to Afghanistan or elsewhere, because of the prohibitive transportation costs.

A 15-ton blast wall, said General McGhee, costs around $3,500 to build. But to move it elsewhere in the region “could cost us, transportation-wise, about $15,000,” making it probably more cost-effective to leave it in place and buy another one elsewhere. The same goes for shipping containers, he said.

“Depending what port you move that same container out of, it could cost you $3,000 or it could cost you $15,000,” he said.

“Everyday we have to make a determination of what port you are going to move it out of, and by the way, do you move it out by air? Air is going to be much more expensive to do.

“That would depend on where the war fighter needs it, and when he needs that piece of equipment. If it can be 30 days, then we will probably go ahead and put it up either by rail or by truck, and then put it up by ship and get it up there. If it has got to be there in the next 24-48 hours, then it is going to have to go by air. But when you do that you really quadruple the amount of cost to get that piece of equipment in there.”

Didi you analyze the sand yourself and know that what you are being told is TRUE? I mean lets get serious for a second.

You were told of movable biological labs in Iraq..THAT WAS A LIE
You were told of nuclear bombs in Iraq...THAT WAS A LIE
You were told of SUPER GUNS...THAT WAS A LIE
You were told american was in imminent danger...THAT WAS A LIE
You were told Iraq was going to attack Saudi Arabia...THAT WAS A LIE
You were told Iraq pulled babies out of incubators in Kuwait...THAT WAS A LIE
You were told Iraq was involved in 911 ...THAT WAS A LIE
You were told that Iraq harbored Al Quaida...THAT WAS A LIE
Yellowcake..THAT WAS A LIE
The whole reason for big in Iraq was supposedly for terrorist...THAT WAS A LIE

DO YOU SEE THE PATTERN????? ....

Now how much did this "sand" cost the american taxpayer?..
Being that the Iraqi never bombed and ameriacan military or housing facilities what reason was there to go on with building BLAST WALLS?

What is it like being a SHEEPLE?..(You should be able to answer that easily)

You were told of movable biological labs in Iraq..It was orginally true, Iraq also had brilliant counter intellegance that led other countries to believe it had much more WMD that it ever had.
They did have massive amounts of chemical weapons orginally and did use them against the Kurds as well they where also very advanced in biological weapon production with the help of German scientists.

You were told of SUPER GUNS...The guns did exist in working prototypes, a multi chamber fixed canon, I was a great fan and admirer of the builder and designer Mr Gerad Bull.
In fact his "base bleed method" was used in the South African G5 and G6 for their time the best in the world, now every one uses it.
As for the rest some I agree and some are pretty much a grey area

Wow... they wanna spend all that money to kill Iraqi people, destroy their country and buy sand in the desert,
...but when it comes to spending a dime to give a poor American kid health insurance that might save it's life, an absolute conniption fit takes place. UnF-ing believable! What is wrong with people? ::)

Powerpack let me remind you that you are talking to ME and not the KNUMBSKULLS on this board. All that you mentioned above is a FLAT OUT LIE...NOT one thing america claimed against Iraq panned out to be true. Had Iraq had nuclear weapons, biological weapons, chemical weapons etc..surely having america willfully attacking the nation would have been reason to put the weapons to use...but alas they didn't. You wanna know why they didn't? BECAUSE THERE WERE NO CHEMICAL, BIOLOGICAL, NUCLEAR WEAPONS.!!!!

Your mention of weapons being made by the Germans is a LIE and TRUTH at the same time. HOW IS THAT? When ameria caused the war between Iraq and Iran it sent to Iraq chemical, Biological and conventional weapons so that the Iraqi would kill the Iranians (in a quest to get Iran's oil fields). When that did not pan out..thanks to Oliver north all manner of weapons were sent to Iran from america and various European countries for the Iranians to attack Iraq...PLAN FAILED. These weapons america and europe sent were destroyed after the war ended (in the 1980s) and were never remanufactured. The chemical and biological weapons that were left over have a definite SHELF LIFE of a couple of years (3 to 5) and after that they are degraded and useless. So YES twenty plus years ago Iraq HAD weapons, but with this so called WAR ON TERRORISM there was not one weapon that was biological, chemical or nuclear useable. However america used chemical, nuclear (DU) and biological weapons on the Iraqi...so who is the sick demented bastards in this scenario?

The LIE of super guns and the pictures shown on the news for the simple in mind to believe, was nothing more than a water line. Had the american public had the mentality of a DOG it would have seen and known this information and pictures were a LIE. The Iraqs even took the american press to this "super gun" to show where the water was being pumped from and to through this pipe. The pipe was curved and travel a crooked path...How the hell can a missile be fired through a crooked pipe???. Also what the fu*k is a super gun? No one has ever asked that question. Does it shoot super bullets? Here is a picture of a section of what america called a super gun ...This is beyond fucking laughable. This is a section of pipe used to carry water or some liquid under high pressure and may possibly be a pipe to carry high pressure gases of some sort such as steam. Alas the DUMB ameriacn ran with it believing Saddam was going to shoot a SUPER BULLET from Iraq to america.... I thought that was what Inter-Continental Ballistic Missiles were for?

Brilliant counter intelligence? ahahaahaha..If they had it they would have known americas real intention before america arrived in the Middle East. They also would have known of their fellow Arab neighbors who sold them out as well by allowing america to use their air spaces, runways, militaries etc in attacking Iraq. All of Iraq's neighbors are therefore GUILTY AS HELL for the death and destruction that has come to the million and a half INNOCENT Iraqi people and the total destruction of Iraq at americas hands..Damnation be on their and americas heads for this.

So far as the mountain of other LIES spoken of Iraq...well I don't think it needs explanation now. The goal of taking control of the oil fields has now happened. america has divvied up Iraq like a pie selling its oil fields to european and american oil companies to be exploited to the point of exhaustion. The million and a half dead are looked upon as justified collateral damage and the RUINED nation is of no concern to either europe or america...Isn't it funny though that the two nation turn around and act like they are so concerned about pollution, greenhouse gases, global weather change, etc etc...yet care nothing about the most important thing upon this earth..... HUMAN LIFE!!!

I surely never supported the Iraq War one iota, however the article is nothing more than an inane attempt to create a controversy where none exists.  Blast walls have to be built with specific materials, lest they fail at perhaps the cost of human life only to be built and rebuilt again and again well exceeding the cost of a structurally sound and well fortified wall from the start.

Face it, your article is stupid.

I don't buy into the american LIE/GAME/TRICKERY...
Lies games and trickery by the elite over the servants are as old as the sand.  Instead of blaming America as a whole for trickery that is old as time, it would be more fruitfull to identify the timeless evils that keep this same game going.  As you are doing now, it only serves to blame the helpless and those who only want their country to live up to its stated values--stated values that I'm sure you even agree with.

I am sure you understand when I say american i mean its government and those who rule the nation... I am not talking about any and every Tom, Jane and John most of who are clueless to what is really going on  and who is in control. To have a congressman tell not only its citizens , but the whole world that Guam is going to tip over from over population is to say that people, are so dumb, they will believe anything that those who rule over them, will say...

It is actually UNDER-INFLATED opinion I have of myself. My statement was intended to shock just like a sudden unexpected slap would to anyone one. TO LIE that openly despite every congressperson, government representative being CAUGHT in their LIES and still believe it and to try and pass it on AGAIN as the truth is unbelievable. Condelezza Rice, Colin Powell, George Bush, Cheney etc etc WERE ALL BUSTED LYING ABOUT IRAQ and now you want to try and resurrect the DEAD LIE?...come on. Don't play with me. BTW because you want to believe the AMERICAN LIE does not mean the actual TRUTH/History is invalidated.

All of the proof, evidence etc that supported all that I have said was already posted on this board a million times...Let's not even discuss how many times it was on the Web, television, newspapers, magazines etc etc. America and Europe were the only two bastard nations to create and deliver for use such barbaric devices to KILL HUMAN LIFE. These chemicals were NOT used against the KURDS as your lying american news media tells you, but against the Iranians. But let us forget all of the Iranian, Iraqi fighting lets get to who would have developed such devices to kill.

When the supply of these chemicals, which varied from nerve gas to mustard gas and white phosphorus were destroyed..It was done quickly when america started this so called war on terror, but not so quickly before investigators made videos of the agents with their american, German English, Belgium, French etc labels and codes still clearly marked on the drums of the chemicals and shown to the world on the news and in documentaries made by many investigators who were against the war. Many said during the initial stages of this current attack on Iraq that america rushed in to get a hold of the chemicals left behind since the Iraq Iran war and Desert Storm so that no one would find out that america and europe sold these chemicals to Iraq and also so that Iraq would not use the chemicals against them in this attack. Problem was these chemical were now all useless as they had degraded to nothing. America was hoping that it was going to keep the Iraqi from using the chemicals against them by getting and destroying them first.... time and degradation beat them to it. When all of what america hoped would justify going to war with Iraq failed it LIED ITS ASS OFF with claims of 911, Al Qaida, Osama, Anthrax, Nuclear bombs, Mobile Biological labs, Yellowcake, Kurds, human rights violations, democracy, freedom yadda yadda yadda and yards of bullshit.

Then came the SUPER GUN with its SUPER BULLET claims (laugh laugh laugh) and the DUMMIES fell for it like Madoff victims. High pressure water pipes, oil lines and gas lines labeled super guns....AGAIN if Iraq had a super gun why did it not use it?...It certainly would have been justified in doing so. So far as trying to continue LYING and making claims of SUPER GUNS EXISTENCE AND SUPER BULLETS just stop so you make no further ass of yourself. America did not attack Iraq over SUPER GUNS, SUPER BULLETS, BIO LABS, SADDAM, AL QAIDA, OSAMA or any of the other BULLCRAP....IT WAS OVER THE OIL!!!!!...Plain and simple

Since americas invasion the GREEN ZONE has been established...and it just so happens this region is full of UNTAPPED OIL also it is in northern Iraq that the Kurds live...Uh, guess what happened to them and what will happen? They were killed and the rest forced off the land, because america now controls the oil.... What a benefit for the Kurds having america there... ::) ::) ::)

So you admit that there where chemical weapons that where used against the Iranians............
The Kurds where gassed in 1988 long before any invasion and in fact the Iraqis where still US favourite at that time
The Babylon gun was never finished only the multi combustion chamber prototype which was finished and fired both horizontally then vertically.
Videos of it was actually shown of by the Iraqis as a propaganda tool before the two invasions even took place
The pipe section where designed to look like high pressure oil pipes to over come sanctions but the steel and machining was of weapons grade.
US governments have lied on certain things as have many other goverments very few people are denying that
But you cant just rewrite History where there are facts....... I know you try but you cant

Doesn't that turn you into what you claim to be fighting against.... just another con?

You're obviously beyond STUPID...I just told you america and europe GAVE THESE WEAPONS TO IRAQ TO ATTACK IRAN. Iraq did NOT develop these weapons as you and others have implied. America wanted the Kurds out of the northern region years ago, because they knew of the vast untapped oil reserves there, so guess who really attacked the Kurds ad they are doing today?  Keep in mind also Saddam was just another american puppet installed to do the bidding of america..... No SUPER GUN, NO SUPER BULLETS, NO WMD, NO NUCLEAR BOMBS...ALL LIES.

Just admit your so called argument FAILED and trying to get a point across to someone who wishes to believe LIES is impossible. I have no time for people deliberatly IGNORING FACTS...You wanna believe your american LIES about bombs, bullets, guns, chemicals etc then go right ahead...I am not stopping you. I only made it clear to you that all that you are trying to present has already been proven a LIE many times over. I can go and dig up all of the news reports, pictures, facts disproving all that you say is true, but you would still argue against it. I posted the same picture posted by the press and on the news of a PIPE that was claimed to be a SUPER GUN...It is a PIPE...Like it or not...it is a PIPE. You believe what you are brainwashed to believe because it is what your government tells you to believe and therefore you stop thinking and/or questioning things brought before you or told to you. For anyone at this point to still believe in the Iraq 911 connection is a FOOL, or ignore the photos of Rumsfeld conducting business with Saddam which he claimed he never did, but the photo shows otherwise IS A FOOL, ...those who support the LIE of Iraq and ignore the ameriacn participation in ALL OF THE CONFLICTS over the past twenty something years in the Middle East, wants to support the type of violence and destruction of life by war like you have witnessed in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Hey SAMSON, as usual u have no idea what the fuck ur talking about. We don't control a friggen thing. I'm in USF-N, to jackasses like u, thats northern Iraq. We're sitting on all that oil, and the Iraqi's control it, not us. The contracts are serviced by a host of multi-nationals, just like every other oil producing nation. The local iraqi government  in our province gets 1 dollar a barrel per day per barrel produced. They produce over 500K per day. They get 1 dollar per 150 qubic feet of natural gas produced.  This area will be awash with cash soon. We don't see a bit, unless its an American company that has the contract. Ur wrong on this and ur wrong on everything else, why...because u get ur info from a slanted and filtered net. U don't have facts and u have no experience...ur an idiot.

We're sitting on all that oil, and the Iraqi's control it, not us. The contracts are serviced by a host of multi-nationals, just like every other oil producing nation. So I guess this means the war for oil was a total failure?

War for oil was a success, baby.
The US has bases on 1/4 of the world's oil, right now.

And it's just sitting there.  Mone in the bank, sold in dollars. History will look at the WMD fib and praise bush for having the foresight to engineer a war to 'manage' these reserves.

I'm being serious here.  China doesn't have enough energy to grow as fast as it wants.  They give us a lot of money.  THIS gives us some power to check them in the future.

So while I was offended Dubya delivered that big lie... well, I understand.  We americans were children who really can't fathom what the world will be like in 100 years.  But yeah, to be honest, Bush wasn't moral about it - but in the utilitarian sense, he sure did hook up the USA for years to come.
