Wide Grip Chins
« on: April 09, 2010, 04:58:30 PM »
Do any of the pros anymore do wide grip chins? Doesn't seem like they do. Is it because 1) too heavy in the off-season, 2) not strong enough pre-contest mode, or 3) too lazy. I think they are a great exercise; however, it doesn't seem like many pros today utilize them often. Seems like many more pros in the past used them. Then again, maybe I am way off.

I googled Wide Grip chins and 2 photos came up of Arnold and Franco. No current pros came up.

I think part of it is that you can't find the proper bar in most gyms.

Overated = Palms Up chins, pulldowns or rows  close grip = Dorain Yates approved. Best back of all time.

I could give a shit what today's pros do. I do wides every back day. First thing. One set bodyweight four sets wit a dumbbell between my feet. Then on to dead lifts.

I do barbell rows "yates style", and they are great. But I always include wide grip chins into my work out. Don't you think its a stretch saying they are over-rated?

Well, I don't care what they do either. I still do wide grip chins. I was just curious why they don't do them.

just like any other exercise, it a tool in your arsenal

people like to act like its one exercise that makes or breaks you, like you cannot have a good back without dead lifting, cannot have a great chest without flat bench, and cant have great legs without squatting

it has its place, but doing wide grip chins or not doing wide grip chins, is not going to be what lost you the olympia

Of course not. It just seems like they are rarely utilized, as opposed to often, or at least sometimes.

I like chins but the shoulder isn't a fan, LOL! Also, the ROM is a little too limited.

True. But with his genetics he could have probably gotten away with not doing them.

I never go to wide anyway. I am only 5'5", so I tend to keep my arms not so spread apart. Improves the ROM slightly.

Thats a mute point, genetics or no genetics the human body has the same anatomy.

I'm 6'2" with long arms. Also had a partial Teres tear so there's some instability that needs regular rehab exercises.

Mr Nobody's silent point aside, some people have better insertions. I have high lats so deads and bent rows seem to work a lot better. :)

Ahhhh, good point. Maybe its psychological. It just doesn't feel right when I don't do them. They are always my first exercise when I train back.

I sort of take my statement back. Joel Stubbs claimed to do 3 different versions of chin ups (wide, underhand, palms inward)

 :o :o
