Calif. Gay Marriage Ban Repeal Falls Short

Pretty much the same outcome whenever this is put to a vote.

Calif. Gay Marriage Ban Repeal Falls Short
Monday, 12 Apr 2010

Gay rights activists say they have failed to qualify a measure that would repeal California's same-sex marriage ban for the November ballot.

Restore Equality 2010 chairman Sean Bohac says the volunteer-run group fell short of gathering the nearly 695,000 signatures needed to put the initiative before voters. Monday was the deadline for submitting the signatures to the Secretary of State's Office.

Bohac says Restore Equality's failed effort was undermined by the decision of more established gay rights groups not to participate in the campaign.

He says same-sex marriage supporters now are turning their attention to trying to repeal Proposition 8 in 2012.

A lawsuit to overturn Prop. 8 also is pending before a federal trial judge.

Word is that they came nowhere near getting the signatures needed. There are two explanations given for this:

One, the gay activists are waiting for 2012, where the turnout will be larger. However, that also means MINORITY turnout will be larger too. Hispanics vote for Prop. 8 53-47 and Blacks overwhelmingly went for Prop. 8 70-30.

Two, California is strapped for cash and the people don't feel like giving gay activists tens of millions of dollars to watch them lose again.

The one laugh I got out of the 2008 election was that it was minorities who turned out in CA that killed gay marriage.  It was hysterical hearing all the twinks complain about racism in the 'minority community" that was the cause of gay marriage going down.

And, you should have heard all the racist garbage that came from white homosexuals, when CNN made that report, after Prop. 8 passed.

Not to mention the lovely "tolerance" displayed by the lefties, hoping their political opposition dies off, so that they can actually win at the ballot box.

Shame really.  Equal marriage rights for all is something we should all strive for.  They should be afforded the same legal and social status as hetro married couples receive from marriage.
Abandon every hope...

Know what I find really funny? Dems had/have a filibuster proof majority and could have easily passed marriage reform but did nothing... it didn't even come up. :)

Actually, Democrats and Republicans passed a marriage reform bill.  It's called the Defense of Marriage Act.   :)

The twinks blasted clinton for that.

It passed 342-67 in the House and 85-14 in the Senate.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Defense_of_Marriage_Act

The vote reflects the sentiments of the majority of the country.

My point is the Dems could have expanded or changed the definition of marriage and put a bill on Obama's desk easier than passing healthcare reform. His not being for redefining marriage notwithstanding, they still had the votes.  :)

I understood your point.  My point was it's not a partisan issue.  The majority of Democrats support traditional marriage, so the fact they had an overwhelming majority didn't really matter.

My point was that gay marriage isn't an actual political issue* beyond shutting a vocal minority up every 4 years. :)

Well I don't know.  I've been saying for a while that it's only a matter of time.  It's going to happen.
