Weekly jobless claims jump 24,000 to 484,000

Jeffry Bartash WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- The number of people applying for unemployment benefits jumped 24,000 in the latest week, but the increase appeared to stem largely from the Easter holiday and other onetime factors that distorted the data. Initial claims rose to a seasonally adjusted 484,000 in the week ended April 10, the Labor Department said Thursday. The four-week average of initial claims -- a better gauge of employment trends than the volatile weekly number - increased 7,500 to 457,750.

Economists surveyed by MarketWatch had forecast claims to drop to 430,000. Continuing claims in the week of April 3 climbed 73,000 to 4.64 million.

Just when you thought it was safe: Foreclosures spike
By Les Christie, staff writerApril 15, 2010: 3:41 AM ET

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- The housing market has seen some positive signs recently, such as stabilizing home prices and increased sales, but foreclosures continue to haunt the market.

In the first three months of 2010 foreclosure filings rose 7%, to more than 930,000, compared with the previous quarter, according to the online foreclosure marketing firm RealtyTrac. That is a 16% jump over the first three months of 2009.

Yeah, but Bernanke says otherwise. If he says so, it must be so.
