Kerry, Graham, Lieberman to unveil climate bill
« on: April 25, 2010, 08:42:10 PM »
A lot of people in Washington have supported this, and it was written in a bi-partisan effort.  Obama supports capping emissions.  Palin supported it as well.  Does this thing pass?

 Source: The Washington Post

In their last and best shot at enacting a climate bill this year, Sens. John F. Kerry (D-Mass.), Lindsey O. Graham (R-S.C.) and Joseph I. Lieberman (I-Conn.) plan to unveil a draft Monday that will provide a streamlined system for capping greenhouse gas emissions from the utilities and transport sector but still aims to reduce the nation's carbon dioxide output by 17 percent in 10 years.

The measure offers numerous concessions to businesses, including allowing manufacturing and energy-intensive industries four years before they would be subject to the carbon cap; provisions for offshore oil drilling; $10 billion for the coal industry to capture and store its carbon emissions; and enough loan guarantees and incentives to provide for the construction of 12 nuclear power plants.

"Because of the broad-based industry support that I expect the bill will garner, both at the rollout as well as beyond, I think this is the best path forward," said Fred Krupp, who heads the Environmental Defense Fund.

Yep.

Guess what I found out 333, which is no surprise, after all of the calling and emailing I did about Cap and Trade Graham still supports it even though his staffer admitted to me on the phone that the majority of us down here are against it!  What the hell does that tell you?

Enough is enough.

BILLY,

Actually, 8 democrats and 25 republicans opposed cap/trade.

So about half the republicans are on board, and the majority of the dems.  Can't blame the libs when half the GOPers are on board for this POS bill too ;)

Sure.  I would like to bet you $1 that cap/trade will, unfortunately, pass.

It will be called "pollution control" or some other nonsense, it will be total sellout crap, but a few republicans will sell out and it'll squeak by.

But so are the repubs.

We can argue about which party sucks more, but what's the point.

Be sad if they don't get some sort of emissions cap in place sooner rather than later.
Abandon every hope...

Why?  The private sector is doing a pretty decent job on trying to move forward with the "green" iniative.  What good will a law do to make us more pollution free?

I don't believe it is at all Mr Dumpling and as such i believe the need to add a cap won't hurt the economy any more than it did when Bush Sr passed a similar cap and trade like system in 1990.  It is and always will be a contentious issue with people but it's something that needs to be done.  Business does not pay the true cost of its impact this much we know, adding a cap will go a long way to helping alleviate that gap between what they pay and what damage is done.  No where does it give anyone the right to pollute this beautiful country as much as they like in the name of the all mighty dollar.  it's not a constitutional right and it sure and sh*t shouldn't be.

I understand the pollution part completely as I'm an avid outdoorsman as I assume you are too.  It disgusts me when I see I see stupid rednecks and their little trash dumps in the middle of the woods.  What this bill does do though is create a system with no value(carbon credits) that can be readily purchased and sold between businesses.  Giving something value that has none such as this is nothing but a scam to the American people who will have to pay a higher price for their energy needs and certain products.  That is my biggest issue with the cap and trade system...it would be one thing if the government put a limit on the amount of carbon a company can produce and say, "If you go over this amount you pay x fine, period", but the credit system is stupid at best.  There is too many news stories coming out about Al Gore, Goldman Sachs, and other huge financial institutions that want a piece of this...we have seen what happens when they get control of things that are bad bets or have no value(derivatives for example) and the adverse affects it can have on our already fragile economy.  This legislation stinks.

I would be more inline with companies no longer being able to sell flouride compounds to local water municipalities that are actually a waste product of their smokestacks than to have emmissions control that will ultimately effect the American people more than a business.
