Rate your draft
« on: April 26, 2010, 02:47:55 PM »
This write-up explains how I feel the players the Patriots selected in this past draft will fit into their system. A two gap 3/4, based on reading and reacting. I realize some of you will be uninterested in this post. If that is the case, please move on. If you'd like to write a similar review for your favorite team(s) I'd be interested to read it.

I give the patriots draft an A- due to the players they picked (all team captains) and also the picks they traded for next year (extra second + third rounder next year).

Devin MCcourty - Coveted by both the Jets and Miami and also rumored to be taken by the Saints in the first round, I think the Patriots picked up a tough physical corner with their first pick. Devin's been compared to Revis by more than a few college coaches and pro scouts (and while that is probably a stretch) he is extremely fast, physical and a very hard worker. He's also a big threat in the return game. He should fit in well with Bodden, Butler, Meriweather, Chung and Wilhite. This guy completes a makeover of the entire Patriots secondary.

Round 2

Rob Growncowski - Thought of by many as the most complete TE in this draft, Gronc is a Jason Whitten type player who can give the Patriots the ability to cause match up problems all over the field. Huge; fast for his size, with soft hands...this is a pick I really liked. The only knock on this kid was a back injury that held him out for 09. That said, I assume (Well, I know because belichick said as much) the Patriots had him looked at extensively during his visit. Guts, rumor has it the Pats traded up to get him because your Ravens were going to draft him with their pick.

Jermaine Cunningham - The most underrated player on the Florida D this year,...Cunningham projects as a olb/pass rusher in the Pats system. If you compare his numbers to guys like Kindle and other top DE's in this draft, you will see they are shockingly close. Why did the pats take him? His size. He's a Ted Johnson type prospect who should do well alongside Meyo.

Brandon Spikes - My favorite pick of this draft. Spikes was a highly productive, nasty player over his whole career in the toughest devision in college football. This guy reminds me of Tedy Bruschi and I have high hopes for him at lb for the Patriots. I was shocked to see him available in the second round. A slow 40 time at the combine seems to have hurt his stock a bit, but as you know, 40 times mean little for lb's in the 3/4...it's first step speed, moter, smarts and instincts. I think this kid will make an immediate impact.

Round 3

Taylor Price - I know nothing about this wr. I guess he being compared to David Givens...a very productive player the Pats drafted years back.

Round 4

Aaron Hernandez - Tim Tebows fav target at Florida. A big, fast te, who will give the patriots a legit red zone target and will cause match up problems in the slot. From what I gather, Hernandez was the third best tight end in this draft (behind Groncowski and Gresham). Getting two of the top 3 Te in this draft is huge.

Are you going to contribute to the thread? Or just the usual? Maybe explain why you like the picks?

Well    first we ended up with not only the player we wanted  but also a player who wanted to play for us.   That helps.   He's the biggest and baddest wr we've drafted since Irvin!    Romo wqas up till 3am Friday morning tossing passes to Bryant last week!     Our LB Sean Lee has the heart of a lion (no pun intended)  Other than his ACL, he is a hell of a football guy, just imagine him a yr after sponging off everyting from mentor Brooking!    The Corners/safeties we drafted are just that    guys who can play both    and the one from D2 is a hell of a returner.   We drafted Sam Young who is a safe pick....he's played in big games and is big.  The Tacke we drafted from WM was a sleeper with speed and talent at tehDT position.   So I'd say Jerry Jones did a great job.   A plus with honors!

Suh is a monster, no one can argue that. Jahvid Best seems too injury-prone, but he's the fastest RB in this year's draft so I can't fault them for taking him. We'll have to wait and see how that one plays out. Spievey is a solid corner, I don't recall anything spectacular last season, but he makes good plays. I don't know a lot about Fox, but it's hard to argue with bringing in an OL to protect Stafford, especially if he can take over for Backus after a season or two. Young is a good pass rusher, should be great for coming off the edge and throwing off the timing in the backfield. Toone honestly looks to be the steal of the draft for Detroit. Watching his film he has great moves and great speed. He's a little undersized, but watch out for him to be a threat in the return game as well as in the slot.

Best is a small Scat back and threw his body around in college but that will not happen in the NFL.

Jahvid Best had three concussions this year and he will be out in four years.  :-\

I dont know enough about college ball to rate our draft I think we filled the positions we needed to fill but I dont know much about the players we drafted...

what I do know is that we had the chance to pick up thomas jones for 2yrs 5 million and we passed on him WHAT THE FUK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

for team that paid a POS like ahman green like 15 million to pass on jones for 5 million in a position that we have had trouble in is idiotic to me...we have like 4 or 5 running backs and Id trade all but 1 of them for jones this upcoming season...

JPP - B+ on potential only

Im not sold on him being an instant impact player.

gmen were close to the bottom of the league in points allowed. JPP mst likely need a couple years to mature and reach his potential. But when your defense is very suspect, i dont see the sense in drafting a project that high. Maybe the new d.c. had a big voice in the pick. idk.

Im not familiar with most of the picks. I didnt watch all of the draft and this year just seemed like blah for me sports wise. The interest isnt as strong as it once was.  ???

It's impossible to give meaningful grades for about three years or so, but I like the O-line and safety picks by the Niners. Don't really know anything about the LB from Penn State they picked up.

Love the signing of the best return man in the college football.  I had never heard of the guy.  Looks very impressive.

just being a pompous bastard here...

the niners system is to pound the run game. An intelligent star qb would work in any system but i think with the niners slight boom in success the last 2 years, they can live without drafting a qb that high because i dont think it would put them over the top regardless.

love their draft this year. They couldve used a legitimate pass rusher but 2 stud lineman + mays ( in the 2nd round, good value imo, aside from his lackluster cover and anticipation skills)

I agree and to be honest none of the 4 that came out this year were anything special to be honest imho.

Not me.  They already said Smith is the starter.  Carr is the backup.  Nate Davis is no. 3.  QB wasn't their biggest need.  I would have liked to see them draft McCoy, but they have to see if the former no. 1 overall pick can earn his paycheck.

I'll give the Giants a B for now.

I think the Gmen are hoping Piere can be another Osi.he's the kinda d-end the Giants like.rangy a little light but can rush the passer

2nd pick.Joseph Linval they want to be the next Fred Robbins.big guy, stuffs the run, frees up the lb's and every once in awhile get a pass rush.

3rd pick.my favorite pick the Gmen made.he had a second round grade and they got him in the 3rd.
great athelete and the Giant NEED safety help especialy if Philips isn't healthy

4.Philip Dillard.don't know much about him but another BIG need for the Giants was inside lb.

5.Mitch Pertrus.typical pick by the Gmen.they don't pick o-line early.they develop them over time and this guy is suppose to be a mauler.

they also took a punter because Feagles might be done.

Miami (fla)'s Fox is another Sam Young.   Not a Okung   but a big realiable guy who has played in big games.  Those two will be in the league for years.

Almost all Hurricanes in the 2000's have had injury history!    But I trust guys like him and Young more than the Okungs and the Trent Williams.   Fox and Young have faced better DE's and OLBs, they've stated at least 3 yrs a piece and are able to start if needed at least on the right side if asked.   Trewnt and Okung may be forced to play on the left which will have guys like Demarcus and Ray Allen droooling!  I wanted Dallas to get Fox   for he's from Ft Wrth   but Young will do for now.

The Ravens had a terrific draft. They wisely traded out of the first round once Gresham and Bryant were taken and landed two first round graded talents in Kindle and Cody in the second round.

OLB Kindle has big time talent but needs to add weight to his upper body.

DT Cody out of Alabama needs to keep excess weight off. He's strictly a 1st and 2nd down player but his size will free up a lot of room for Ray Lewis to clean up on tackles. Reminds me of Sam Adams back in the day.

Dickson out of Oregon will add speed to the TE position. Pitta out of BYU is an excellent red zone target and run blocker and might be a better TE selection than Dickson.

David Reed out of Utah brings a lot of speed to the WR position and provides depth.

DT Arthur Jones out of Syracuse provides depth but might have a hard time making the roster behind Ngata, Gregg, and now Cody in the mix.

OT Ramon Harewood is a humongous specimen out of a small school. He is as raw as they come and may have a hard time makling the roster.

Another year, another great draft by Ozzie Newsome. Clearly, the Ravens have one the top 10 best front offices in the NFL.

It was a good draft. You did take a risk with Kindle, though. The reason he fell to the second round is because he could have a career ending injury in his knee. He's rumored to have suffered a micro fracture. Not sure how serious. I love him as a player; the injury must have a very good chance to heal if the ravens took him in the second round.

The Pats had to trade up to grab Groncowski before your ravens could pull the trigger.

The Ravens are top 5 in drafting.

Colts
Patriots
Steelers
Ravens
Chargers

We grabbed the OTHER Gromkowsk!    His fullback brother. But I hear the TE picked by Baltimore is compared to Witten...if that's true, they got themselves a hell of a guy!
