Australian Fitness & Health Expo - April 30th
« on: April 27, 2010, 01:06:45 PM »

A lot of manufacturers and supplement companies are headed to Sydney, Australia for the 2010 Australian Fitness & Health Expo, including Optimum and ISS.  Should be interesting, coming off FIBO in Germany (which is the largest fitness expo in Europe).

We will start filming series 4 in June. If you would like all of series 3 on DVD, PM your address and I will send it to you.

I am not going because of Ruhl, however I am looking forward to catching up with him. Both Markus and Monica Brant are going to be in my Brunswick gym the following week anyhow.

I am going mainly to get business cards from every single exhibitor, to build a data base of potential booth holders for my sport and fitness expo to be held with next year's pro show in Melbourne. Although my expo will be way different to Filex, I am looking forward to seeing what they do well and not so well.

It is also a chance for me to meet up with my long term sponsors and catch up with industry friends and fans from around Oz.

The event caters to all manner of fitness people and goodness knows who else. It is nothing like the IRSA conference in America. Not many of the major equipment companies have displays which is disappointing. You walk around and see all these gym people who look like they never did resistance training. These shows are quite popular with the public and are always interesting to visit. It is quite sad how bodybuilding has been overtaken by fitness and crap training. Balls, Pilates and all manner of bullshit apparatus and gimmicks. Women have always been anti weights so they buy what these people are peddling. We see fad after fad come and go. At the seminars there is almost nothing re resistance training. The industry has been invaded by fitness people and they are running it and changing what is done in gyms. Even Golds Gym at Venice has Zumba classes.

What could possibly be made to justify a fitness expo now? I mean, free weights are perfect, we have everything I need. Nautilus machines were good, but Hammer strength put an end to the need to build a better machine.

Without all of the nonsense, what would be on the show floor? Maybe new machines to work around injuries? Fitness is so simple that you don't have yearly advances to justify an expo.

I design and build gym equipment and see improvements every year at these trade shows. There is always some new way of solving equipment problems or making them better. Equipment has improved a lot over the decades. The Aussie builders have a long way to go, however, but are innovative which is good.

Hammer make a few excellent machines and many that are not so great and some that are bad. Eg., the seated calf machine. I wouldn't put one in my gym. The incline, bench and decline are excellent and give the whole line a boost. Muscleheads like them so tell gym owners who often install a whole line. Foolish. I so dislike having those plates banging around and being left on the machine or the floor. Hammer make a line with weight stacks but gym owners in Australia buy the cheaper plate loading ones. By the time these machines are imported to Australia they cost twice what the Americans pay for the same thing.

The general public have plenty to see. Lots of people go to gyms so there is widespread interest in this industry. People sell supplements, clothes, watches, apparatus, and much more. You can walk around and see different things every time you go. You can try the machines which is what I like.

There are displays that are interesting to the public. Bodybuilders, fitness girls, aerobics, etc.
