Texas governor Rick Perry says he needed just one shot from his laser-sighted pistol to take out a coyote that was menacing his dog during an early morning jog near Austin.
AUSTIN, Texas -- Texas Gov. Rick Perry has a message for wily coyotes out there: Don't mess with my dog.

Perry says he needed just one shot from his laser-sighted pistol to take down a coyote that was menacing his dog during an early morning jog in an undeveloped area near Austin.

Perry told The Associated Press he sometimes carries his pistol, loaded with hollow-pointed bullets, when he jogs on trails because he's scared of snakes -- and that he'd seen coyotes in that area.

When the coyote came out of the brush toward his daughter's labrador retriever puppy on a February jog, he charged it and shot it with his .380 Ruger pistol.

"Don't attack my dog or you might get shot ... if you're a coyote," Perry said.

Read that this morning of Drudge. I'm sure if he had done that in Cali he would have been arrested. Good for him and good for Texas.

Big fan of Ruger BTW. Not a fan of the .380 caliber.

Nice! I would have done the same thing to protect my dog. My .45 has Crimson laser Trace grip. Also not a fan of that caliber but it's all about shot placement anyway.

Shooting a gun doesn't really take any guts.

If he used a knife or a baseball bat I would be impressed.

And that was while he was jogging... Next time he's gonna jog with a SWAT team and wreak havoc on coyote packs.
I thought coyotes usually go around in packs, a single coyote would probably run away if it saw a man shouting or raising his arms.
Probably excessive Texan overreaction.

What do you think he should have done? What would you do if a coyote was threatening your pup? I was hiking in the boondocks about 8 years ago. Just by myself and in the middle of nowhere. I notice I was being stalked by a mountain lion. I threw some rocks at it and it would run off but then it would be right back. At one point I saw it's head peeking out from the brush. It was about 20 yards away. I just calmly drew my tuned Smith and Wesson .357 model 586 with a six inch barrel, dropped to one knee so that I could rest my elbow on my knee, and put a 158 grain right in his head. Blew his skull apart. Gun aficionados will know that this is not an especially easy shot. But I was a competitive shooter at the time (IPSC) and used this particular piece for target shooting. I could easily keep all my shots in the black at 25 yards out so I knew I could get a head shot from that distance. The trigger was tuned and broke like glass.

Of course I had to get out of there real quick because they arrest you for stuff like that. To justify killing a cougar you have to have his claw marks all over.

It's not about impressing anyone. It's about surviving. In one of my training classes we were told that not only is cheating OK but encouraged.

Well, maybe it was 15 yards.  ;D

But, as shooters are apt to do, I counted my steps to the target and "rounded up" --- considerably.

first of all it sounds like animal abuse if he's jogging in a remote location with a  puppy.

Pussy....... a real alpha male would have wrestled the coyote down and beat it to death with his bare hands.

Huh? I'm sure it was close to home. In some rural areas, even where I live, you don't have to be very far from home to be in the jungles or boondocks.

Any dog that can't tear apart a coyote for sport is a dog that doesn't belong to an ''alpha male''

I had to go to a shoot and it was pouring rain and I knew it would also be muddy as hell where I had to go. So I brought "throw around gun" that I never cleaned and shot for kicks, my Ruger P98. That baby never jammed once in the 300 rounds I went through that day while guys with Sigs, Berretas, HK... guns that were 2-3 times the price as the Ruger had jams. Ruger is a great American company and makes tough, sturdy and quality products.

How does that aluminum frame feel in your hand? Heavy? I have the P345 with the rail.

coyotes dont really hunt in packs and they are actually somewhat solitary at times...

LMAO at all the pussies on here whining about him shooting a coyote that could have killed his dog and even if the dog could have taken the coyote why let the dog get hurt in a fight when he could simply shoot it?

it was probably a compact gun that he had on him .380's are very popular concealed carry guns as you can throw them in your front pocket of a pair of jeans and not give away youre carrying...I dont see him jogging with a full sized pistol so that would be my assumption
