LCD TV versus LED TV (is it worth the price?)
« on: April 29, 2010, 06:30:20 AM »
I guess this along the same lines as the Blu-Ray vs the traditional DVD question.

Is LED really that much better than LCD??

The difference between Blu-Ray and DVD is much more pronounced than between lcd and led.  Leds will last longer, use less power, less prone to overheating.  The picture quality is a bit deeper with brighter colors and darker blacks.  The difference will not be noticeable until you are watching a high quality input (e.g. blu-ray) on a larger size screen (40"+).

Personally, I think the led tv's will be similarly priced to lcd in 2 years time.  Its only more expensive now due to it being a newer technology.

Both are LCD TVs. The only difference is the backlight technology. So they are slimmer and have the edge on colors. (esp pitch black)

But if you're looking for the best colors, brilliance and watch tv at night, plasma is still the way to go.

"LED TVs" is a samsung hype.

i look at all these TVs at the store ...720 1080p plasma HD LCD  Blue Ray Supercharged Night Tactical +1 whatever bullshit...they all look the same to me  ::)

the only difference is that they turned the contrast on one of them to look all dark so that you can 'see' 'how much better' the one is next to it  ::)

Yes picture is better on LED in comparison to LCD, if you have the money go with LED.  If not LCD is still fine.

Most important to me is the option for 120 Hz (or 240 Hz) and Motion Interpolation.  Love the way things look with that feature, I know some people don't.  But Last year I was buying an LCD TV I went with a smaller TV with 120 Hz Motion enhancement rather than a bigger one without that feature for the same price.

I've personally never been a fan of Plasma, I watch TV during the day and get a lot of light into my living room, so it wouldn't even be that great of an experience.

As for the difference between Blu Ray and DVD.  Thats HUUUGE, I converted practically 100% to Blu ray a little over a year ago, and I'm never going back.  The difference is really IMMENSE!
When prices go down some, I'll make the leap to 3D technology!

Go to Best Buy and look at them side by side.  Huge difference but I don't thing it's worth $1,000 between the same size tv.

Don't buy a blu ray player. Waste of money.  Buy a Ps3.  It plays blu rays, you can of course play games, store media, photos, play music. It's awesome.  Plus with updates you never get stuck with old techology.  The PS3 has a firmware fix to allow it to play 3D movies without needing to buy anything else.

As for best buy.  Don't fall for their BS.  Most flat panels have a display mode that cranks up the lighting, color etc... to make things look sick.  You get home and watch it in normal mode and realize it's not the same.  Be sure to have the Best buy dude change the mode from being in display mode to see how it will really look at your house.

If you can, wait on the LED LCDs to fall to today's CFL LCD prices for the best deal. Unless you're getting a full-array LED backlight, you'll see weird fading effects, especially with white on black backgrounds. Most of the LEDs out there are side-lit. the full-arrays are still too expensive to make buying one now worth it.

At the end of it, you'll have the tele for years. So as long as you keep that in mind, get the best you can with the specs you wait at the price you are willing to part with. I'm waiting a bit before I get my 60".
Almost always, yes.

all they do is change the contrast/hue/settings on one to make it look inferior to the expensive one next to it

how does 1080p compare to blu ray?

you are mixing oranges and oranges.  blu ray is nothing more than a larger DVD with the capacity to hold more data.

Higher res films require more space, but really what eats up the most space on a disk is audio.    DTS MA can take up gigs and gigs.

1080p is resolution, but you can have 1080p movie on blue ray or a 480i.  Blu ray just allows for more data.  Now most players that play blu ray, will convert inferior resolution to 1080p.

the p stands for progressive.  i stands for interlaced.

its always funny when you see a commercial for Blue Ray or some other high-tech shit on a regular old 1997 TV, and people are like 'WOW IT DOES LOOK BETTER'!!!!  hahahahahhahahaha
