NFL Teams Question Myron Rolle's Commitment to Football?
« on: April 29, 2010, 08:03:01 AM »
Well...too bad he doesnt play QB instead of JaMarcus Russell.  ;)

http://nfl.fanhouse.com/2010/04/27/how-dare-nfl-teams-question-myron-rolles-commitment-to-football/?icid=main|aim|dl8|link3|http%3A%2F%2Fnfl.fanhouse.com%2F2010%2F04%2F27%2Fhow-dare-nfl-teams-question-myron-rolles-commitment-to-football%2F

On Saturday, the Tennessee Titans drafted Florida State safety Myron Rolle in the sixth round of the NFL Draft with the 207th overall pick.

Rolle, whom you previously knew as the Rhodes Scholar who spent his past season in Oxford studying for a graduate degree in medical anthropology, graduated in 2 1/2 years from Florida State, where he played safety for three years. Then he chose to skip his senior year to take advantage of the Rhodes Scholarship, an honor that only 32 men and women garner every year.

You've probably heard of a few of the alums from the Rhodes, guys like President Bill Clinton and former NBA great Bill Bradley.

What you may have heard and brushed off was this: Multiple NFL teams, scouts and executives questioned Rolle's commitment to football because he made this decision.

Why?

Because the thinking goes -- and we're defining "thinking" broadly here since many of the scouts, coaches and executives making these comments would be pumping gas for a living without football -- that Rolle is too smart, that his priorities in life don't revolve entirely around a pigskin bouncing on a field.

Welcome to the 21st century NFL, where your commitment to the game doesn't get questioned if you fail multiple drug tests, drive drunk or rape a woman. But woe unto you if you have the audacity to graduate early from college and take a year off to pursue a Rhodes Scholarship. Then you're a smart guy, the NFL's own version of the untouchable caste in India. That's why the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, including head coach Raheem Morris, could ask Rolle at the Senior Bowl how it felt to desert his teammates for his senior season.

You'd think the way NFL commissioner is trying to clean up the league and rid it of degenerates that he would admonish this from happening ever again and come down on this behavior

A scholar like Rolle, who obviously is the type of guy you want IN your league to represent it, shouldn't have to be asked about his commitment to football when (as you said) they currently have/had guys who obviously didn't give a sh*t while they were actually in college, checkered past, checkered lifestyles that actually put their career in jeopardy.....I guess those guys are fine. LOL

Excellent article.  Myron Rolle was the best character guy in the draft.  NOT TIM TEBOW.

I'm waiting for the comparisons to the Mannings. Wait, there isn't any, Rolle is smarter than whole Manning family pit together...this the guy you want as a spearhead for a image change.
And there would be more of him if it was drilled into young kids heads from a early age about education.
I went to school back in the 90s with one of the top 25 high WR, Jason Smith he ran track as well (in 10s) and was courted for basketball and baseball. And dude was smart, but teachers just let him slide by, so it was message that all we care about is your athletic ability. Sad.

Like the article, stupid players equals a stupid league, and easier to make money off of.

Parker on the money, this stuff even happens at High School level, I played football in HS but wasnt a star athlete I still had to make my grades at the same time the quarterback just fucked around in school and but still graduated and turned out to be a loser in life this stuff pisses me off.

And that is what scares the powers that be in Football. A smart is distrusted, he can do other things. Similar to how smart ugly people view attractive people. Toxie himself said that attractive people in his field are viewed with suspicion.
For one thing, dude entered the draft, so there is his commitment right there...he said 15 yrs from now he might go on to something else. Plus, dude will probably do thing in the offseason that keeps him out of trouble. Which is another plus.

Ya I agree I guess it's a matter of perspective what's cooler intercepting a pass or figuring out some sort of curable pattern in the transmission and distribution of diseases.

I too cannot understand why the NFL doesn't get fully behind a guy like this. Unless, they are in fear that it may discourage other less mentally talented players from persuing dreams of being in the NFL, millionares, beating women, having drug charges and be broke filing bankruptcy by age 30.... Eventhough, this guy could be a perfect role model, the NFL would rather have a league of expendable losers. ::)

While I really respect Rolle...Followed him at FSU in the ACC...I can understand a future employer wanting to be sure he is commited.  No different than when you go for job interview and they ask you the dumbass, "where do you see yourself in 5 years."  You respond with a "Hopefully work here for a couple of years and then maybe decide to leave to go into a different field"  and see if you walk away with the job.

He is a class act all the way, but nothing wrong with a team just checking up when they are going to invest tons of money and time on the guy.

Myron Rolle is an incredible human being, just not a great football player.  Tebow is an incredible human being too, and was an unbelievable college QB.  I think he'll succeed at the next level.  I would never bet against him.

Tim Tebow already had a concussion from getting roughed up in the SEC, let's see how many times he can take a beating running the ball against the top 1% the nation has to offer any given Sunday...

Tebow played 4 years in the toughest conference in football and never missed a game. Not 1.
