Most today call themselves "Lil", and you know by 26-30, one should dropped the Lil by their name. Even Lil Kim, who is like 4'11.

Is it not enought to have heard most of his songs and rate him highly? What is your point? I know he was from Harlem so what? Are you a rap-snob  :-\?

Yes, I am.

you need context to rate someone highly. You need to know whom his peers were and whom he patterned himself after. I feel that you lack the pedigree to rate Big L.

you lack the back ground to appreciate the time frame of Big L.  You don't know the history of when all of this was going down.  At the time Biggie Smalls was beefing with WuTang and Nas. And the uptown crew Big L et al were being ignored, fat Joe was trying to get into the game. This was when EPMD and NWA was nearly dead and a new style of rap was taking over.

Oh great, a rap snob  ::). Instead of encouraging todays youth and being glad we actually don't listen to lil wayne and soulja boy he's gonna preach about what rap is to me. Dude I feel sorry for you. You are pathetic bro.

And you don't know shit about what I listen to so STFU.

no need to curse, we are having a dialog here. Some of lil' wayne stuff is OK, especially the stuff that Drake writes for him.

Big L is too "monotone" his flow/inflection are not dynamic enough, lyrical skills are pretty good though.

Here's a playlist I made of some of my favourites, is it snob approved?  ::)

Do you think that instead of actively trying to listen to the old greats and searching for their stuff that I should just rather turn on MTV because "I don't know what was going on". Dude your argument SUCKS, honest truth. People like you are so proud of being "first" when it comes to listening to stuff. If you feel "proud" about the fact that you listened to this stuff before I did, well congratulations.

Comments

1. Add Rakim "I ain't no Joke"
2. Less LL Cool J
3. Add Big Pun
4. Wu' Gravel Pit..seriously?
5. skip to the 3 min marker, most have this verse rated 10 of all time:

6. Anything from Tribe is good
7. replace your Nas song with
or this
..hell, anything from that first album is classic

Perhaps some of your points are right, I will grant you that.

I see people going around calling so and so the greatest when they don't have the range to do a full comparison. In the end it doesn't matter, music is music

check out
Brand Nubian
Pete Rock and C L Smooth
Big Daddy Kane  <- could have been the greatest but didn't last and went too commercial..
