I'm not sure I said that Basile claimed to be an expert either. I've been ragging on his outrageous spending on camera gear that he really doesn't need unless he is some sort of collector or gets a kick out of buying expensive shit which he won't admit. You wanted me to post pictures so I could have some credibility and I did. I didn't say my pictures were any better than Basile's or your friends for that matter. Where do you get this shit? But I'll admit now that I have big enough of an ego to claim that I at least TRY harder than Basile does, I try to do something with my pictures than just being obsessed with the equipment. In the end as an observer, do you care more about the picture or the equipment that was used? I have fuck all idea about what camera your friend used in that surfboard photo, but it doesn't take away the slightest bit of its awesomeness.
If it was Basile in the same spot as your friend, he'd probably take a picture of some obscure palm tree with a 500mm lens and then talk about how sharp the image is.

Vince, I really like your work, Thanks for posting it for us to enjoy .

I am one of those guys who know nothing about photography but I always have a camera in my pocket and am always taking it out to shoot pictures of anything I think is interesting.

I have close to 9,000 photos on my hard drive but I'm only impressed by less than 5% of them.

With your pemission, I'd like to throw a few up here and ask for your honest opinion and what I could have done to make it a better shot. And if they look like shit, let me know because I won't be offended in the least.

BTW, I knew herb Ritts and his crew pretty well and he had one person who merely changed his film when he used those old film cameras. He actually told me that he didn't know how to do it properly.

This 1st couple of shots were taken on the Venice Beachwalk up towards the Santa Monica border. I felt like I was intruding so I took the photos quickly and left in a hurry.

Hey Stunt. 2nd pic is a discard. *Delete* First pic is really, really good. That the sandwich board is surfboards (which places the locale) and the younger Jew is on a toddler chair are two great foci. There is a lot of stuff  going on in this pic. It's a real keeper.

Sometimes one gets projects that require special lenses. I have one where I want to capture a skyline 22 Km away. I tried a 300mm lens with a 1.4 extender on a D300 but it wasn't long enough. I think an 800mm lens might do the job on a FF camera, perhaps with the extender. I want to almost fill the photo with the buildings and do a 100 to 200 photo panorama. It might be something I can sell, who knows, but it really is a challenge to capture. A problem that arises with such distances in the sub tropics is that you have to wait until cooler times of the year because when it is hot there is no way the atmospheric conditions allow clear images from that distance. You get all manner of air current distortions and the photos are unusable.

Gotta love the way some anonymous jerk with an agenda persists no matter what. Persistence is no guarantee that you are right. It shows only that you have an agenda. No matter what is said you don't change your accusation. You are not the judge of who is a good photographer. I don't accept any one person as a judge of the work of others. Most of the time it is a matter of opinion and that changes with fads and fashion and experience and knowledge.

Lots of enthusiasts want the best equipment they can afford. The longer one takes photos the more gear you will want. When I was shooting RAW plus Jpgs I could use over 100Gb in one day. So don't make rash statements about what someone else needs because that is crap. Why do you think they sell 64Gb 128 Gb cards and bigger ones are on the way. If you shoot video you will need even bigger cards.

Here is a building that is a project of mine. I try to capture it whenever I can and from different angles and time of day and distance. It is a building in downtown Sydney and it quite unique in its architecture. It is a residential tower with commercial levels at the bottom.

You need to educate yourself more about your craft before you spend anymore money.

Your 300 with a 1.4 = 420mm x the 1.6 crop factor of your D300 = 672

But you're prepared to go out and buy a FF and 800 which would still only give you 800?

Why not just buy the 800 then with your 1.6 crop of the D300 you have - 1280

And if you're still stuck, move a little closer.

I shoot with Raw+Jpg on 5DMK2's and 1Dmk4's and that would be well over 3000 shots.

I'm curios to know this as well. Even if he did shoot that many pictures I seriously doubt any man on earth has the patience to do anything useful with them in post production. Hell even running a image script processor on that many images would take fucking days. Oh well each to their own.

Every 100 metres there was something new to record. The 5DII files are huge if you shoot RAW. I don't do that any more because I was needing a 2TB hard drive every year or less! I use RAW only when using artificial light and occasionally when shooting difficult flowers. Difficult because reds, oranges and purples aren't always captured accurately by most digital cameras. The 5DII delivers reasonably accurate colours. This is another reason why I need a top camera. I was fed up with the inaccurate colours when I took flower photos. Roses and Irises for example vary in colour and even my Nikon D300 wasn't adequate. The 5DII produces jpg images that don't need much processing.

My G10 serves me well for most flower shots. It also is excellent for macro work.

So how you do you deal with all these pictures when you get back home and download them? Does it feel like 2000 images were well spent or was it excessive? I'd personally be thrilled to know I have 2000 images with at least over a 100 winners in them. That's a pretty good ratio between garbage and success. Most often though, that's not the case.. at least not for me and most people I know that takes pictures. Did you get a lot of winners out of those 2000 photos?

On one trip I used 3 cameras: 5DII, D300 and G10. I even took some videos because in places the sand was falling like waterfalls. When I attended a photography club the experts told us to shoot RAW. That left an impression on me and I also read what people suggested on the net. My experience with day long shoots told me I needed more memory so I bought two 32Gb cards to supplement my two 16GB cards and two 8Gb cards which adds up to 108Gb. Since stopping the RAW + jpg I seldom fill a 32 Gb card in a day. It is still handy to have more memory if you are away on a trip and can't access a computer or other device to upload your photos.

The one time it paid to shoot RAW was last year at the Australian Pro contest in Melbourne. I could easily change the colour temperature in PhotoShop CS4 and get the colours right. With jpgs it was not possible.

I also shot my daughter's wedding last year and without RAW files I wouldn't have been happy with the ceremony because it was held in the shade on a day when the temperature was over 40 degrees Celsius. That is 105 on the F scale. The RAW photos saved the day. It is possible to do batch processing if many need similar settings.

Here is a photographer I admire. Ronnie Gaubert takes photos of birds. No, not the hot kind seen on Getbig, but the flying kind. He gets up before sunrise because he feels the best light is at sunrise and for an hour afterwards and also the hour before sunset. He takes over 500 photos each outing then processes about a dozen that he is happy with. He shoots RAW so he can get the colours right.

He took this amazing photo of a dragonfly that required a 10 second exposure. I asked him how it kept still for that long. Well, he said insects are cold blooded so if you capture them before the sun warms them up they just sit there. He also uses a 300mm lens with a 1 inch extension tube so it will focus closer. His photo has good depth of field because he used F22.

Do you think I take photography lightly! Do you honestly think I would buy expensive equipment if I didn't feel it was worth the money? I have a 500mm F4 but it isn't long enough even with the 1.4 extender. I have tried it and I need 800. I owned a 7D but had to take it back because of focussing problems. I would buy another 5DII body before owning a crop camera again. I need two bodies for the work I do.

In what way did you feel that RAW gave you an advantage here? Because of the shade?

I myself have noticed that most problems with skin tones that you can get with jpeg(and raw) can in 99% of the cases be solved by fixing the exposure, WB or in dramatic cases by adding a flash, preferably a bounced one of some sort. Too dark of an exposure in the face area can for me reduce dynamics and enhance ugly redness which can be a pain to take away in PS. I usually solve that by popping on a external flash. I love using flashes. If done properly the results can very be pleasing and you're in more control.

Here is a photo taken above Rainbow Beach showing the sand blow. There is a cliff from 100 to 200 metres high that runs for about 5 miles along the beach. To the point in the distance is another mile or two. The only way to shoot it properly is by foot. You can drive a 4WD along the beach for part of the day but could get trapped if you stay when the high tide returns.

While shooting the wedding I didn't have much choice about backgrounds, etc. The couple were in the shade under a tree and that gives a green cast to the subjects. With sunshine lighting up the background it was difficult to get the white balance right. When I used Photoshop and my RAW files the process was much easier and I could set the colour temperature to where I felt gave the best skin colour. As you know, brides are very critical of photos and had I not taken RAW photos I would have disappointed her. I took this project knowing it was going to be challenging and it most certainly was. Would you believe a brand new Nikon 900 flash refused to function at that temperature? I had to use my D300 flash for fill in the group shots taken inside. What a day that was. It was the hottest day of the year and Melbourne called it Black Saturday because many people lost their lives in the bush fires raging in that state. I can't post photos of my family on the internet so can't show you any samples of the wedding.
