SImple sugar right before workout?
« on: May 04, 2010, 08:31:57 AM »
MOst people will tell you to eat some simple sugars right before going to the gym for energy.

But wouldn't this increase insulin output and hamper strenghth?

if your trying to put on size, then one of the best things you can do (nutritionally) is to drink some sugars/carbs before/during/after your workouts.

This plays into my thread about in training supplements.  I think it is a good thing to have a some simple sugars right before or even during the workout.

If you are about to step on contest stage or trying to get your bodyfat into the low single digits maybe it's an issue but for most people it is adventageous.

At least start consuming your aminos, shake, carbs, etc. while training.
Exercise depletes your body of all that stuff, and waiting until you’re finished means you’ve been increasingly depleting for the last hour – or however long your workout lasts – before feeding.

That’s why I always take my BCAA’s (or something) before my workout.
I want it to at least be entering my bloodstream by the time I begin training.

Milos is also a big advocate of inter-workout supplementation for similar reasons, and I agree.

Yes! Sugar before workout can be disastrous. I am speaking for experience...

10grs... and 20 min into the workout I started to feel weak, dizzy and thirsty... and without realizing that it was because of the sugar...

Wow, 10 grams?
Are you normally sensitive to sugar?

Can you handle it okay after your workout?

After the WO it feels great, but I might add that if I don't eat within an hour I start to get weak again (when I eat simple sugars after WO). I have no kind of diabetes, fortunatelly.

That's interesting.

Have you ever had your thyroid tested?
Thyroid conditions can affect carb catabolism and a whole slew of other things, and you don't need to exhibit ALL of the symptoms to have a disorder.
Also, I believe they recently changed the numbers regarding what constitutes thyroid disorders.

Ya 10 grams is a pretty low amount to be making you feel like that.  This is going to be one of those "everyone is different" type things but I can't see most people getting those effects from 10 grams of simple sugars/carbs.

What exactly were you consuming?  Juice, dextrose, a certain supplement...?

Maltodextrin... for the record, if I consume more than 10 grs of sugar I feel euphoric... the same goes to caffeine (I stopped consuming caffeine years ago)... another example is that weed gets me into a rash of rage... doctors said that I am hypersensible to almost every kind of stimulant and that I must be very carefull when some drug is prescribed to me because it can provoque some serious damage in the central nervous system. I always carry with me a pill of valium, just in case... :-[

Well it sounds like you are pretty sensative to certain substances and even macronutrients.  10 grams of carbs are nothing for most people although maltodextrin can act pretty quickly.

lol..   i was refering more to the "HYPER SENSITIVE TO STIMULANTS" guy..

people create their response with anticipation, especially with drugs.

on a side note.. yes its possible to "give yourself a placebo effect"... even in the absence of any 'placebo' drug...

You are wrong! 3 years ago I was with a cold and I went to the pharmacy to buy something to lower the fever and the sore throat. I bought it and took it... 2 hours later I was already in the hospital with severe tachycardia... the doctors told me that the pill had 70mg of caffeine, that provoqued that condition. To fix it, they gave me a valium so that things could come back to normal. You get my point right? I don't need to draw it to you or need I?

Rccs, you obviously know what you experienced so act accordingly in your what you do and don't put in your body.

With all due respect to Tbombz...this is a prime example of where advices, suggestions, whatever on an internet message board needs to be taken with "a grain of salt" so to speak.  If a someone has a certain condition that is triggered by something...well than it is not "in the mind".

Too go back to the origional question though...most people will not react that way.  Too me, sugars are not a bad thing unless you have a condition like rccs's.

i have a few friends just like you, who have extreme reactions to drugs of all kinds, not just stimulants

did i ever doubt that you experienced extreme effects??

i just was speaking on the source of your responsiveness..

in my experience people do it to themselves

of course there are always some exceptions, people who actually have a disorder
