Saudi-funded Fox News rejects ad by veterans group arguing against Middle East oil dependence
May 5, 2010

Last week, progressive veterans organization VoteVets.org released an ad arguing that “a clean energy climate plan would cut our dependence on foreign oil in half and cut oil profits for hostile nations.” The ad asserts that “every day, Iran gets $100 million richer selling oil around the world and peddling hate.”  TP has the story.

While CNN and MSNBC have aired the ad, Fox News is refusing to do so. Politico reports Fox apparently found the ad “too confusing.” Watch the “confusing” ad:

There is nothing confusing about the ad. VoteVets’ assertion that hostile nations profit off our oil dependence is based on a Wonk Room analysis that finds, under the a strong carbon cap regime which restrains U.S. appetite for oil, Iran would lose $1.8 trillion worth of oil revenues over the next forty years — or, over $100 million a day. “If the world moves away from oil dependence, Iran’s regime will no longer be able to rely on petrodollars to stay afloat,” Brad Johnson writes in pretty simple terms.

In a statement issued to ThinkProgress, Richard Smith, a senior adviser to VoteVets who served in Afghanistan, says “the only confusing thing” is why Fox is rejecting the ad:

“There’s nothing confusing about the link between oil and terrorist funding, and even the most dyed-in-the-wool neocons agree on that point. The only confusing thing here is why FOX News would reject an ad that calls on Congress to defund our enemies by finding new sources of energy.”

It’s unclear what Fox News’ motivations are. As Media Matters has documented, the network is a reliable source of misinformation on clean energy reform. Interestingly, Saudi oil tycoon Prince Alwaleed bin Talal owns a 7 percent stake in Fox News’ parent company News Corp, making him the largest shareholder outside the family of CEO Rupert Murdoch. But Murdoch has said the he is for a mandatory cap on carbon emissions and believes that Fox News ought to be covering the issue differently.

I think its you who are confused. First off Fox News isn't Saudi funded so that ridiculous statement is false...next...(from TAH)Maybe Fox thinks the ad is confusing because there’s absolutely nothing in the bill that would support VoteVets making the claim that it would cut our energy dependence in half. The whole ad is a giant load of crap. What magical energy source is so available that we could even cut our dependence to 99%?

The only thing that would cut our energy dependence in the next decade is to draw from our own resources and VoteVets, MoveOn and anyone else who thinks otherwise is only hoping the Clean Energy Bill will reduce our dependence on foreign oil by raising the price of energy beyond the reach of average Americans. In other words, they want to grind America to a halt.

They're a left wing front funded by Soros. Some of their top "independent" group members got jobs with Obama after throwing their support to them. This is an organization that does little if anything for vets..and is more aligned with the wack job lib agenda then independent support for vets......nice fucking try.

Maybe you should do some research first??

"So it turns out that the bastion of televised Republican propaganda, Fox News, is partially owned by Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, who has a 7 percent stake in Fox's parent company, News Corp. According to concerned conservatives, Alwaleed has reportedly brought this influence to bear in pressuring Fox to change its coverage of the Paris riots, and lord knows what else.

One wonders how this will effect Fox News' staunch defenders. How will people who have been depending for true blue American news coverage deal with the fact that a Saudi Prince has been wading in their information stream for years?

Some conservatives are rising up against Fox due to its Saudi Ties. At the annual right wing Constitutional Coalition's meeting in Saint Louis, right wing publisher Joseph Farah slammed Fox News, saying: 'Well this guy owns a very significant percentage of the News Corp and has let the world know that he can get things taken off Fox News when he finds them objectionable and has in the past. And I really believe this is really dangerous for America. '

High level ties to Saudi Arabia are nothing new for conservative America. The Bush administration notoriously flew members of the Bin Laden familyBin Laden family out of America when 9/11 occurred, and there was certainly never any love lost between the Bush familythe Bush family and the Saudi MonarchySaudi Monarchy.

America invaded Afghanistan and Iraq after 9/11 in spite of the fact that it knew very well that 15 out of 19 of the terrorists who perpetrated the horrific act were Saudi. Seriously. 15 out of 19 of the people who murdered Americans on US soil were Saudi nationals and Saudi Arabia did not receive so much as a rap on the knuckles from the USA, much less an invasion. What kind of justice is that?

The conservative movement is repeatedly sold out by its leaders, when will it stop screaming hysterically at the liberal left and focus its rage towards the upper echelons of its own organization, from whence most of the threats against its freedom seem to originate?"

It was a minor point that derailed both the story and the thread.

About 1/10th of the American economy and alot of your politicians, including imo a former president named Bush.

I didn't find the ad so much confusing as disengenous. The message is clear, however the ethics questionable.
If iran is such a despicable nation, that should be clear without the need to psychologically manipulate the public into coming to that conclusion. I would think Hugo Chavez in the past has decried America more so than Achmedinejad. Achmedinejad speaks out against zionism not America. As for oil revenues funding Terrorism, I'd say that was more applicable to Saudis than Iranians, and the majority of American oil infact comes from Canada, ...but when did the American people ever let facts and the truth get in the way of the real power structure's agenda?
