Obama's Supermarket-Scanner Moment: I Don't Know How To Work an iPod
NewsBusters ^ | Mark Finkelstein

Remember when the MSM went crazy over [and likely exaggerated] George H.W.'s supposed unfamiliarity with a supermarket scanner? Pres. Obama has now had his supermarket-scanner moment, claiming he doesn't know how to operate an iPod, among other popular electronic devices. Do you think the MSM will pick on this in the same way to paint a portrait of an out-of-touch president?

Addressing the graduating class at Hampton University today, PBO said:

"With iPods and iPads and Xboxes and PlayStations, -- none of which I know how to work -- information becomes a distraction, a diversion, a form of entertainment, rather than a tool of empowerment, rather than the means of emancipation."

Maybe because he doesn't own one and has never seen it's screen?

Not "quite" the same as someone watching a supermarket scanner on the regular.

Seems like technical incompetence has been rampant on all Presidents for the last 30 years or so.

How would Obama be baffled with an "evil" ipod when he is supposed to be very proficient with the Blackberry?

I have an MBA and own MCSE and Net+ certifications.  I also have an AS degree in computer networking and have experience in novell, linux, server 2k, etc.

I have always used a shittly little mp3 player - drag and drop - until this year when I finally got an ipod.  I hated it at first, and didn't know how to use it for a few weeks until I had time to just play with it and learn it.  So with all my computer skill, the little fvcker frustrated me.

So if Obama was too busy creating 210,000 new private sector jobs last month to read his ipod documentation, I'm okay with that.

Ummmmmmm, how exactly would he create "private sector jobs?"  I think the CEO's of the companies and management created those jobs by running solid businesses.  If you are talking about govt jobs, he didn't do shit to "create" them, other than just sign a piece of paper.

And if he can't work and ipod, he is either lazy or dumb....take your pick.  BTW, you were lazy for not learning how to use yours.  ;D

what is there to silverline?

Unless you have the $ to buy a $179 portable music player, you're not going to know how to operate an ipod.

if he couldn't work a calculator, I'd consider him a dumbass.
if he didn't know they had automatic doors or grocery store scanners, I'd consider him out of touch.
If he didn't know the diff between "google" and "text messaging", i'd consider him technically out of touch.

But really... let's be honest... Many americans don't have nearly $200 to spend on a little muscie player when the radio is, well, free.   if Obama was lecturing people owho didn't have skill with an expensive electronic, he'd be insensitive and elitist, I know.

My point, 33, is that there are plenty of things to bitch about obama for... but shitting on the guy because he isn't able to quickly program and navigate a $200 music entertainment center, is pretty weak dude.

Shit on him for that horrible BP mess cleanup.  Shit on him for the lack of control on the markets.
This week, you're shitting on him for the 210 to 290k new jobs, and the fact he can't run an ipod.  Focus, baby :)

Well, he took blame for the job losses, so you have to give him credit when new jobs are created.  can't have it both ways.

And I WASHED my ipod... I was so sick about it... $179 down the drain... shitty.... but now that I'm addicted, they have me by the short and curlies, and I had to buy another... ugh...

I believe this is also why, e.g., US Presidents have traditionally been men with some sort of decided (yet concealable) mental defect along with their minimal level of electability. (Ability to govern no longer enters into it, if it ever has.)

you reminded me of this.

I'm off to the gym!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Presidential playlist: Obama opens up his iPod

The Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama showcased his diverse musical taste, ranging from Bob Dylan to Jay-Z and Bruce Springsteen, after revealing the playlist on his iPod.

In an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, to be published this Friday, the Illinois senator said he had "pretty eclectic tastes".

The list of bands reads like the acts at a summer music festival, with the Rolling Stones, Sheryl Crow and Ludacris all in the mix.

Obama said that, growing up, he listened to Elton John and Earth, Wind & Fire but that Stevie Wonder was his ultimate musical hero during the 70s.

The Stones' track Gimme Shelter topped his favourite songs from the band.

His selection also contained 30 songs from Dylan. "One of my favourites [for] the political season is [Dylan's] Maggie's Farm. It speaks to me as I listen to some of the political rhetoric."

In the song, Dylan sings about trying to be himself, "but everybody wants you to be just like them".

The jazz legends Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Charlie Parker were also included in the compilation.

Many of the musicians on Obama's iPod, such as Bruce Springsteen, are supporting his White House bid.

Earlier this month, Dylan said he believed Obama was redefining politics in the US and could bring change to a nation in upheaval.

"I've got to say, having both Dylan and Bruce Springsteen say kind words about you is pretty remarkable," Obama said. "Those guys are icons."

Obama said he had not met Springsteen but that the two had talked over the phone.

"Not only do I love Bruce's music, I just love him as a person," Obama said. "He is a guy who has never lost track of his roots, who knows who he is, who has never put on a front."

He added that, when speaking to the singer, he addressed him by his moniker the Boss. "You've got to," Obama said.

The candidate said he thought rap music was also helping to break down barriers within the music world. Indeed it was reported last month that Obama will make a cameo performance on the rap singer Q-Tip's next album.

However, he expressed concern over his daughters – Malia, nine, and Sasha, seven – listening to some rap songs.

"I am troubled sometimes by the misogyny and materialism of a lot of rap lyrics," he said, "but I think the genius of the art form has shifted the culture and helped to desegregate music."

He said the hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons and the rappers Jay-Z and Ludacris were "great talents and great businessmen".

"It would be nice if I could have my daughters listen to their music without me worrying they were getting bad images of themselves," he added.

Obama appears on the cover of the Rolling Stone issue. The magazine endorsed him for president in March.

This is right up there with WMD and 911 in terms of major lies that have changed american history.

That being said, did the interviewer ask him if he actually owned an ipod, or if this was the music list on his musical listening device of choice?  In other words, if people ask me what my favorite flavor jello is... I'm not going to say "I am cheap and prefer the store-brand of gelatin..."  Of course not, I will say "cherry".  Ipod is one of those terms like Kleenex or JellO, brand names for industry wide terms.  You say, "pass me a kleenex", even if it's another brand.  Make sense?

Can we find pics of him wearing an ipod?  i remember he was an avid blackberry user - do they hold music, and if so did he use both a blackberry AND an ipod?

“You’re coming of age in a 24/7 media environment that bombards us with all kinds of content and exposes us to all kinds of arguments, some of which don’t always rank all that high on the truth meter,” Mr Obama said at Hampton University, Virginia.
