Lol great moment today in the gym
« on: May 12, 2010, 02:19:20 AM »
Bench day - and I am trying to break my PR, we have this personal trainer who is very small but completly jacked - he looks about 50 but is maybe a lot younger, like I said very very jacked.
He is doing cable rows - I don't like him since I've seen him being very snotty to other members.
But after a look around in the gym to find somebody who can spot me I decided well lets ask him if he can spot me for one rep.
Of course I was polite and waited until he was finished with his set, I asked him politly if he can spot me for one rep since I am maxing out.
He looks at me and says: Oh maaan, I am on my free time, I really don't have ti.... ah okay but only one.
I told him its okay I ask that skinny kid over there dude - he says: nah okay okay but only this one.
So I get ready he is standing behind me, I say: Listen can you move a little back I need to get into position, when I went into benching position to move my legs back and arch my back with my ass to the bench (like you should do Mr personal trainer) he looks at me like I am crazy - I told him, can you count a slow 1 second when I have it down  to my chest (which gets me the second weird look from him :D ).
So I lift and it was pretty easy.
When I was done and thanked him for the spot, he gets all hyped up and gives me a preaching session that i should keep my feet up (the bench we have has feedrest lolol) I tried to tell him that I am learning to powerlift and he looks at me again like I am nuts.
I say, I dont hurt myself as long as I keep my ass to the bench and move my legs back - he never heard of it before :D :D

This is how you bench

ah come on man thats a little harsh, I thought it was funny that a personal trainer think its okay to use friggen food rest to bench - so you have no
stabilization what so ever.

130 kilos - I am close to my overall goal of 150 kilos - I dont have much of a talent to lift heavy so I always have to work extra hard.

I feel sorry for the guys that work out with him and pay a lot of money (no doubt) he makes them balance on balls and such things.

What this kid is doing by video taping is what Apenis should be doing to prove he does what he says he does.  He should be video taping his meals and cooking and training.  This would make him so much more believable.  But just posting up bullshit is just that, bullshit.  Apenis can talk the talk (not that good) but he can't come close to walking the walk

Here`s a tip for you Stark, most so-called personal trainers today know jack shit about lifting/training, unless you ask them about "core" training, stabilizers, or balance balls!! :(

Man - this feet up business when you're benching - over here in Germany just about everyone at my gym benches this way. They all have good front delts. I get looked at like I'm some kind of leper for arching my back.

I spotted for this older dude in my gym who asked... total Dbag.

He laid down on the bench with 225 on the bar.  I was thinking, wow, dude must be pretty strong... he looks soft.

Anyway, he instructs me to step back TWO FEET because seeing a spotter ruins his concentration.  Then says "Don't touch the bar, no matter what, until I say ASSIST".  Then he slugs the bar off, and does these weird bench press BOUNCES off his chest... 3 reps of it going from half-range, to bouncing off his rib cage, at which point it drops on him, with him never saying ASSIST.

I walk up 2 feet and pull it off him.  He's visibly pissed but thanks me anyway.  I leave that section of the gym.  Complete assclown.  I see him trying to instruct some other twink a minute later for his next set of bench press drops, and the exact same shit happens.  I see him mumbling some shit about "hard to find a decent spotter in this town".  Oh brother.

I go to Cardinal Fitness here in CHicagoland so I can go to any of the 10-15 gyms in the area for the same price. I like to switch gyms once in a while.
EVERYONE of the fucking gyms has personal trainers that are complete assclowns who look like they're going to hit a nightclub after their sessions. The training tips are like the shit you saw on your first weider bench press set little poster that shows you different excersises and then beachball shit for "core".

Hey Stark, Just curious how much you weigh? 130kg is a decent bp if it was done in strict style with a full pause at the chest and without any bench shirt. And regarding this fit trainer, it's obvisious that he is clueless.

Personal trainers can be downright embarrassing.

I won't train near them in the gym. I can't stand listening to them talk.

I am a personal trainer. I use sign language.  ;D

Atm I am around 110 so its only 20kg over my bodyweight - and I am not cut at all - little belly I am "blessed" with big shoulders and a wide chest always have been I also think that for a long time I have been benching with my shoulders so they just got stronger, my bench went up a lot when I finally figured out how to propperly bench - my legs and biceps are always the part that laggs behing - which I am addressing with rigerious squatting and pullups - I don't do curls anymore since they do fuck all for me but intead I do dips and pullups a lot (which is also what Wendler says in his 5/3/1 ebook).
Calves are not goot as well - I am just a big fat guy :D - which is fine with me

The reason arching like crazy like he shows on the tape is to decrease the range of motion. If he was flat he would have to push that bar another 12" at least.  If you want to "bench" the most amount of weight that's the way to do it.  If you want the most true functional strength gained you wouldn't inflate and arch to cut the range of motion.

Big fat guys that arch like that have the biggest advantage.  Some barely have to move the bar to get lock out.

How tall are you, Stark? Remember taller fellas with long arms gots to move the weight a further distance, but if you can get yourself into a proper arch then you can really cut down the distance that the bar has to move. FYI, in general, the worlds greatest benchers have these three traits in common: 1. Short arms (can't be modified) 2. Huge Chests (can be modified) 3. Big arch (can be modified) P.S. Please say hello to your wifey for me :) I'm just messing wit ya man! The thing is, I can still remember the pic you posted awhile back of that nude female doing strict military-style push-ups saying that she was your wifey :> Oh my! For me and my tastes, that lady has got the prefect bod on her ;)

Sorry Oldtimer, I see that you beat me to it. I'm curious, do you have any competitive BP experience? I used to do some meets in the past, but I just got tired of being called a bench press homo :> This coming from fellas who did full meets.
